What you can do with this logic grid puzzle generator

Logic grid puzzles ask you to match items across several categories using a set of clues. A classic example: five people each own a different pet, live in a different coloured house, and drink a different beverage. You read clues like "The person who owns the cat lives in the blue house," mark X or ✓ in a grid, and deduce the full solution.

This tool lets you build your own puzzles from scratch. Choose how many factors (categories) and how many items per factor, type in your clue sentences, and generate a branded PDF ready to print or share. The grid, clues, and optional answer key all appear on A4 or US Letter paper, formatted for classroom handouts, puzzle books, or personal challenge sheets.

What you can customise

  • Grid size: 3×3 up to 5×7 (factors by items per factor).
  • Factor names: Name your categories — Colour, Pet, Drink, Sport, anything you like.
  • Item labels: Fill in the actual items for each factor (Red, Blue, Green; Cat, Dog, Fish).
  • Clues: Paste your own clue sentences, one per line.
  • Clue style: Easy mode formats clues with bold keywords; standard mode presents plain text.
  • Puzzle title: Add a custom heading to the top of the page.
  • Results page: Toggle an answer-key table on or off.

How to use the tool

  1. Pick the number of factors (categories) and how many items belong to each factor.
  2. Type a name for each factor in the text boxes that appear.
  3. Enter the item labels for every factor — these populate the rows and columns of the grid.
  4. Paste your clue sentences into the clues box, one clue per line.
  5. Choose Easy or Standard clue formatting.
  6. Decide whether to include a results page with the solution grid.
  7. Click Generate and download your PDF.

Who logic grid puzzles are for

Teachers

Use custom puzzles to reinforce critical thinking, reading comprehension, and deductive reasoning. Tailor vocabulary and themes to your unit — historical figures, science terms, literary characters — and print class sets in minutes.

Parents and homeschoolers

Keep kids engaged on long car trips or rainy afternoons. You control the difficulty by adjusting grid size and clue complexity, so the same tool works for a seven-year-old and a teenager.

Puzzle enthusiasts

Design your own challenges, test friends, or compile a booklet for puzzle nights. The results-page toggle lets you keep the answer private or share it alongside the puzzle.

Worked classroom example

A Year 5 teacher wants to review animal habitats. She picks a 3×3 grid with three factors: Animal (Lion, Penguin, Frog), Habitat (Desert, Antarctic, Rainforest), and Diet (Carnivore, Piscivore, Insectivore). She writes three clues:

  • The lion does not live in the Antarctic.
  • The animal in the rainforest eats insects.
  • The penguin is a piscivore.

She types those sentences into the clues box, labels the factors and items, sets the title to "Animal Habitats Logic Puzzle," and generates. Twenty-eight students each receive a printed copy. They fill in the grid during silent reading time, then check their work against the optional results page she projects on the whiteboard.

How the generator works under the hood

The engine lays out a matrix with one mini-grid for every pair of factors. If you choose three factors, you get three sub-grids; five factors yield ten sub-grids arranged in a lower-triangular pattern. The generator calculates cell sizes to fit your chosen number of items, draws outer borders in black and inner grid lines in a lighter shade, then places factor names and item labels around the edges. Clues appear below the grid in paragraph form; easy mode wraps key phrases in bold to help younger solvers spot critical words. An optional second page shows a filled results table with every correct match.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

The PDF margins and font sizes automatically suit both A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) paper. Print from any browser or PDF reader without adjusting scale settings. Grids remain legible even at 5×7 because the engine shrinks cell sizes and label fonts just enough to fit the page while keeping text readable.

Notes and limitations

  • The tool does not validate that your clues lead to a unique solution — you are responsible for testing your puzzle logic.
  • Maximum grid size is 5 factors by 7 items; larger puzzles won't fit legibly on a single page.
  • The generator does not auto-generate clues from a solution grid; you must write clue sentences yourself.
  • Label text longer than the cell width will shrink to fit, but extremely long words may still overflow.

FAQs

Quick answers

What grid sizes can I create?

You can build puzzles from 3×3 (three factors, three items each) up to 5×7 (five factors, seven items per factor). Larger grids offer more challenge but require more careful clue writing to ensure a unique solution.

Do I need to write my own clues?

Yes. The generator does not create clues automatically. You type or paste your clue sentences into the text box, one per line, and the tool formats them on the PDF.

What is the difference between Easy and Standard clue styles?

Easy mode highlights important words in bold to help younger or less experienced solvers spot key information quickly. Standard mode prints all clues in plain text.

Can I include an answer key?

Yes. Toggle the "Include results page" option to add a second page with a completed solution table showing every correct match. You can print both pages or keep the answer page private.

Will my puzzle fit on A4 and US Letter paper?

The PDF layout suits both A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) without scaling. Cell sizes and fonts adjust automatically to fit the grid on one page.

How do I make sure my puzzle has only one solution?

The generator does not validate logic or uniqueness. After you generate the PDF, solve the puzzle yourself or use a logic-grid solver tool to confirm your clues lead to exactly one answer.

Can I change the puzzle title?

Yes. There is a title field where you can type a custom heading. This text appears at the top of the puzzle page above the grid.
