Create Printable Custom Crossword Puzzles from Your Own Word List

Quickly create free printable crosswords from any word list — spelling words, topic vocabulary, book study terms, or a class quiz.

Create puzzles in A4 or US Letter PDF format for home, school, tutoring, and vocabulary practice. Paste your words and clues, tune grid size, intersection rules, and backtracking effort, then download a print-ready PDF with numbered Across and Down lists and an optional solution page.

This straightforward custom crossword maker helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers, and tutors create clear, printable vocabulary puzzles quickly, with no sign-up or extra steps.

Why use this custom crossword generator?

A crossword pulls several literacy skills into one activity — decoding clues, retrieving vocabulary from memory, spelling each answer accurately, and thinking about how letters intersect. Building the puzzle from your word list means every clue reinforces the exact vocabulary you are already teaching. Instead of hunting for a fixed PDF that matches your topic, generate exactly what you need in seconds. Use it for:

  • KS2 topic vocabulary revision
  • spelling list practice in puzzle form
  • book study and class reader word work
  • end-of-topic review lessons
  • homework sheets tailored to this week's words
  • tutor sessions and intervention groups
  • homeschool vocabulary blocks

It is especially useful when you want a puzzle that matches your curriculum rather than a generic one.

What you can customise

The generator offers flexible options so you can build the right puzzle. You can choose:

  • Word list: paste any words, one per line
  • Clues: enter clues in WORD=Clue format, or separate the answer and clue with a tab
  • Grid size: fixed (11x11 up to 21x21) or Auto based on your longest word
  • Minimum word length: drop very short words if you want
  • Maximum words: cap how many entries the engine tries to place
  • Require intersection: on means every placed word must cross another
  • Minimum intersections: force each word to cross at least one or two others
  • Backtracking effort: low, medium, or high for denser grids
  • Solution page: include a filled-in grid for marking
  • Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF

This flexibility makes it easy to move from a loose beginner puzzle to a tightly interlocked KS2 challenge.

Notes and limitations

  • Words that cannot intersect cleanly with already-placed words are skipped; try higher backtracking or a lower minimum intersection count.
  • Very short lists (fewer than 8 words) may produce a sparse grid; 12-25 words usually gives the best shape.
  • Clue lines without a matching word in the list are ignored.
  • Words without a matching clue line print the word itself as the clue, so always double-check your list.
  • Printed output can vary slightly by printer and browser margin settings, so printing at 100% scale is recommended.

Grid and placement options

Auto grid size

The engine sizes the grid from your longest word. Best for quick generation when you do not want to tune the layout.

Fixed grid size

Pick 11x11 for compact mini puzzles, 15x15 for a standard classroom puzzle, or 21x21 for a full revision sheet. Best when you want a consistent look across worksheets.

High backtracking

Tells the engine to try harder to fit words into the grid. Best when you want a dense, tightly interlocked crossword.

Minimum intersections

Force every placed word to cross at least one or two others. Best for visually tidy classroom puzzles.

Worked example

Imagine a Year 5 class finishing a Vikings topic. Paste LONGSHIP, RUNE, ODIN, THOR, VALHALLA, VIKING, SHIELD, SAGA, BERSERKER, FJORD, SKALD, HELMET as the word list, add clues like LONGSHIP=Wooden boat used for raids and ODIN=Chief Norse god, leave the grid on Auto with high backtracking and a minimum of one intersection, and generate.

The engine tries to interlock all twelve words, numbers each entry, and produces a printable PDF with separate Across and Down clue lists plus a solution page. Children solve it the next lesson as a topic review.

Methodology

The engine places the longest word first, then tries each remaining word against every crossing square, scoring candidate placements by how many valid intersections they create. When a word cannot be placed it backtracks and tries alternatives, using the backtracking effort setting to decide how long to keep trying. Once all words are placed or skipped, each entry is numbered by its top-left square and grouped into Across and Down clue lists. The final page is produced by the shared branded PDF template.

Helpful preset ideas

  • Topic vocabulary (12-15 words, Auto grid, high backtracking)
  • Weekly spelling list (10 words, 11x11 grid, medium backtracking)
  • Book study word bank (15-20 words, 15x15 grid, minimum intersections 1)
  • End-of-topic revision (20-25 words, 17x17 grid, minimum intersections 2)
  • Solution page on for quick marking
  • Solution page off for an assessment-style puzzle

Best ways to practise with custom crosswords

  • Match the clue style to the learner's reading level.
  • Encourage learners to solve obvious clues first, then use crossing letters to decode tougher ones.
  • Ask children to justify their answers orally to build vocabulary recall.
  • Pair the puzzle with a dictionary for unknown words.
  • Reuse the same word list with different clue styles (definition, synonym, fill-in-the-blank) over the week.

Short, focused sessions usually work better than long, occasional ones.

FAQs

Quick answers

How do I write my own clues?

Use the format WORD=Clue text on each line, or separate the answer and clue with a tab. Words without a matching clue print the word itself as the clue.

How big should my word list be?

Around 12-25 words gives a comfortable, well-interlocked grid. Longer words make for bigger, easier-to-read crosswords.

Why are some of my words missing from the grid?

Words that cannot intersect cleanly with the placed words are skipped. Try a higher backtracking effort, lower the minimum intersection count, or rephrase your list.

Can I get the answers?

Yes. Toggle the solution option and the PDF prints a second page with every letter filled in.
