Create Printable General Knowledge Crosswords for Trivia and Vocabulary Practice

Quickly create free printable general knowledge crosswords with mixed trivia clues across geography, science, history, and the arts.

Create puzzles in A4 or US Letter PDF format for classrooms, family quiz nights, tutoring, and independent vocabulary work. Tune grid size, intersection rules, and backtracking effort, then download a print-ready PDF with numbered Across and Down clues and an optional solution page.

This straightforward general knowledge crossword generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers, and tutors create engaging, printable trivia puzzles quickly, with no sign-up or extra steps.

Why use this general knowledge crossword generator?

A trivia crossword is a gentle, low-pressure way to widen vocabulary and general knowledge at the same time. Learners decode clues, retrieve facts, spell the answers correctly, and use crossing letters to decode tougher clues. It is as much about reading comprehension and inference as it is about memory. Instead of hunting for a fixed PDF, generate exactly what you need in seconds. Use it for:

  • upper KS2 and secondary vocabulary enrichment
  • form-time and tutor group starters
  • homework extension activities
  • end-of-term fun tasks
  • family quiz nights
  • tutor sessions and intervention groups
  • homeschool enrichment blocks

It is especially useful when you want a puzzle that stretches vocabulary beyond the current topic without overwhelming the learner.

What you can customise

The generator offers flexible options so you can create the right puzzle quickly. You can choose:

  • Word list: the default mixed trivia bank or your own list
  • Clues: edit any clue in WORD=Clue format
  • Grid size: fixed (11x11 up to 21x21) or Auto based on your longest word
  • Minimum word length: drop very short words if you want
  • Maximum words: cap how many entries the engine tries to place
  • Require intersection: every placed word must cross another
  • Minimum intersections: force each word to cross at least one or two others
  • Backtracking effort: low, medium, or high for denser grids
  • Solution page: include a filled-in grid for marking
  • Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF

This flexibility makes it easy to tune the puzzle to the age group in front of you.

Notes and limitations

  • The default word bank mixes capitals, rivers, planets, composers, artists, scientists, and landmarks — good general knowledge but not a curriculum-tied revision list.
  • Words that cannot intersect cleanly are skipped; try higher backtracking or a lower minimum intersection count.
  • Some default clues assume knowledge that younger children may not have yet, so check the generated clue list before handing out.
  • Printed output can vary slightly by printer and browser margin settings, so printing at 100% scale is recommended.

  5. Pick a minimum intersection count and backtracking effort.

Worked example

Imagine a Year 6 form-time activity. Leave the default word list in place — LONDON, PARIS, TOKYO, NILE, AMAZON, MARS, SATURN, GALAXY, OXYGEN, GRAVITY, ROMEO, HAMLET, PICASSO, MOZART, EINSTEIN, DARWIN, EVEREST, PACIFIC, SAHARA, ROME — keep the grid on Auto with high backtracking and minimum intersections set to 1, and turn on the solution page.

The engine interlocks as many words as it can, numbers each entry, and produces a printable PDF with Across and Down clues like Capital of England, Longest river in Africa, and Shakespeare's tragic young lover. Learners solve it while you take the register.

Methodology

The engine places the longest word first, then tries each remaining word against every crossing square, scoring placements by how many valid intersections they create. When a word cannot be placed it backtracks, using the backtracking effort setting to decide how many alternatives to try. Once placement is done, entries are numbered by their top-left square and paired with the matching clues from the word bank. The final page is produced by the shared branded PDF template.

Helpful preset ideas

  • Default trivia bank for a quick form-time puzzle
  • 17x17 grid with high backtracking for a dense end-of-term task
  • 11x11 grid with 10 short words for a warm-up
  • Edit the clues to match a current topic
  • Solution page on for easy marking
  • Solution page off for a competition-style puzzle

Best ways to practise with trivia crosswords

  • Let learners solve in pairs so they can pool knowledge.
  • Encourage them to start with clues they are sure about, then use crossing letters to decode tougher ones.
  • Pair with a dictionary or atlas so unknown words can be looked up.
  • Discuss interesting clues afterwards to embed vocabulary.
  • Reuse the same grid a week later with the solution hidden to check retention.

Short, regular puzzle sessions usually work better than occasional long ones.
