Your words, jumbled

Type or paste a list, one word per line. Each prints scrambled, with a space beside it to write the answer. The animals it starts with are a placeholder — replace them with this week's spellings, a topic vocabulary, a set of names, whatever the lesson is actually about.

Then pick how many to use, and whether they are taken in order or at random.

What the difficulty setting actually does

It filters by word length, not by how hard the shuffle is. Easy takes words of 3 to 6 letters, medium 5 to 8, hard 7 to 12.

Two things follow from that. It only applies when the selection is random — ask for the first N words in order and you get exactly those, whatever the setting says. And if your list has too few words in the chosen band, the generator quietly uses the whole list rather than printing four items, so a difficulty that appears to do nothing usually means the list does not have the lengths to support it.

There is also an option to avoid handing back the original word by accident. It retries the shuffle when the result comes out unscrambled, which matters more than it sounds — a three-letter word has only six arrangements. Words of one or two letters are left alone entirely, since there is nothing useful to do with them.

Why themed lists work better

A general scramble is a puzzle. A themed one is a lesson in disguise.

Knowing that all twelve words are animals gives the solver a way in that is not just letter-shuffling: they can look at the letters, think of animals, and test candidates. That is retrieval practice on the topic vocabulary, dressed up as a game, and it is why the theme should be written at the top of the sheet rather than kept secret.

What to put on it

This week's spellings, which is the commonest use by a long way. Subject vocabulary before a test — parts of a plant, countries, keywords for a topic. Character names before reading a book. Christmas, Halloween and end-of-term words for a lesson nobody is going to get much else out of.

Outside school: baby shower and wedding games, quiz rounds, staff training days. A scramble is the least objectionable icebreaker available.

Word choice matters more than settings

Long words are easier than short ones. Counterintuitive, and reliably true: eight letters give more structure to work with and fewer plausible alternatives, while a jumbled three-letter word is close to a coin toss. Which is worth knowing before you set the difficulty to hard and wonder why the sheet came back finished in four minutes.

Avoid anagram pairs in the same list. If both LISTEN and SILENT are on the sheet, the answer key is arguing with itself.

Practicalities

Ten words go on a page and longer lists split across sheets evenly, so twelve words print as six and six rather than ten and two. Multi-word entries are scrambled a word at a time, with the spaces kept.
