Create Printable Missing Letters Worksheets for Phonics and Spelling
Quickly create free printable missing letters worksheets that target the exact letters your learner needs to practise.
Generate A4 or US Letter PDFs for home, school, tutoring and early reading practice. Pick how many letters to hide, choose vowels only, consonants only, or random masking, and download a clean fill-in-the-blank sheet with an optional word bank and an answer key.
This straightforward missing letters puzzle generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers and tutors create fresh phonics-friendly practice pages in seconds, with no sign-up or extra steps.
Why use this missing letters generator?
This tool produces clear, printable fill-in-the-letter activities for everyday literacy work. Rather than trawl through fixed PDF packs, generate the exact masking pattern you need on demand. Use it for:
- EYFS and KS1 phonics practice
- KS2 spelling revision
- vowel and consonant awareness
- homework and independent work
- intervention groups and tutor sessions
- homeschool spelling routines
- early reading warm-ups
It is particularly useful when the same word list needs to be revisited with a slightly different gap pattern each time.
What you can customise
The generator offers flexible options to shape the puzzle around the learner:
- Word count: print up to twelve or more words per page
- Mask mode: Random, Vowels-only, or Consonants-only
- Remove mode: let the engine choose automatically, or fix a count of 1, 2 or 3 missing letters per word
- Difficulty: Easy removes roughly 20% of letters, Medium around 30%, Hard around 45%
- Selection mode: choose where in the word gaps appear, such as the first positions or spread across the word
- Word bank footer: include or hide the list of answer words at the foot of the page
- Answer key: include a second page with each masked word beside its full spelling
- Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF
- Worksheet title and instructions: set your own heading and prompt
This flexibility makes it easy to produce sheets that match the learner’s stage, from early CVC gaps through to trickier KS2 spellings.
Notes and limitations
- The engine selects gap positions when you generate or download, so repeated exports may produce a different pattern even with the same word list.
- Vowels-only masking always leaves at least one letter visible so the word shape is still readable.
- Consonants-only masking works best with words of four letters or more.
- Printed output varies slightly by printer and browser margin settings; printing at 100% scale is recommended.
Who these worksheets are for
Missing letters worksheets suit a wide range of learners and settings.
Parents
Produce short, focused practice sheets for home reading routines or weekly spelling revision.
Teachers
Print phonics starter tasks, morning work, guided reading follow-ups and spelling reinforcement.
Homeschool families
Create worksheets that grow with the child, shifting from vowel gaps to harder consonant blends over time.
Tutors
Generate targeted practice for one-to-one sessions, especially for learners who need extra phonics support.
Worksheet mode options
Random masking
Random mode hides any letter across the word. Ideal for general spelling revision and mixed practice.
Vowels-only
Vowels-only mode blanks A, E, I, O and U, which is excellent for short-vowel phonics and CVC work.
Consonants-only
Consonants-only mode hides consonants and is helpful for consonant blend and digraph recognition.

Worked example
For a Year 2 child practising short-vowel spellings, choose twelve words, Vowels-only mask mode, Medium difficulty, and leave the word bank on. The engine might print “c_t”, “h_t”, “fr_g”, “sh_p” and so on, with the answer words listed at the foot of the page. The answer key on page two shows each gap filled in, giving an adult a quick marking reference.
Methodology
The generator takes your word list and passes it through the branded PDF template. For each word it picks letter positions according to the mask mode, selection mode and difficulty, making sure enough letters remain visible to leave the word recognisable. The word bank footer, answer key page, name and date fields are handled by the shared template, so every sheet prints with consistent margins and branding.
