Your words, letters shuffled
Paste a list — one per line or comma separated — and each word prints with its letters in a jumbled order and a line to write the original on. Up to twenty words a sheet, with an answer key.
Difficulty is word length, not shuffle strength
The setting picks which of your words get used, by how long they are. Easy takes words of three to six letters; hard takes seven to twelve.
Length is the right lever, because it is what actually makes an anagram hard. Three letters have six possible orders and a solver can simply run through them. Eight letters have over forty thousand, and the only way in is recognising chunks.
So a difficulty setting only does something if your list contains a spread of lengths. A list of six-letter words will produce the same sheet at every setting.
The setting worth knowing about
Avoid original makes sure the shuffle never accidentally produces the word itself, which a random shuffle will do on a three-letter word roughly one time in six.
Leave it on. A word printed unshuffled looks like a printing error rather than a gift, and children report it as one.
Some scrambles have more than one answer
Worth knowing before you mark. The letters of listen also spell silent, or enlist, or tinsel. Earth gives heart and hater. The key prints whichever word you supplied and nothing else.
Mark for any real English word rather than for the printed one. If you want to avoid it entirely, pick longer words — the chance of a second valid arrangement falls away sharply past about seven letters.
Where the word list should come from
Anywhere that already matters. This week's spellings, the key terms from a topic, characters in a book, the vocabulary from a language lesson.
Topic words earn their place twice over: unscrambling photosynthesis requires having seen it spelled, which is exactly what you wanted practised.
What it actually trains
Not spelling in the usual sense. Orthographic knowledge — the stored sense of what an English word can look like, which tells you that th and ing are plausible and tk is not.
The useful technique is to look for those chunks first: spot a likely ending, park it, and work with what remains. Most children attack the letters left to right and stall.
What is adjustable
The word list, how many to use, whether they are taken in order or at random, difficulty, avoid-original, the answer key, and a title. A4 or US Letter, printed at 100%.
FAQs
Quick answers
What word lists work best?
Lists of 10–20 single words work best. Words shorter than three letters are passed through unchanged because there is nothing to scramble.
Will the scrambled word ever match the original?
With "Avoid original" turned on the engine reshuffles up to 12 times to make sure the scrambled spelling differs from the original.
How many puzzles per page?
Up to 10 entries print per worksheet in a clean two-column layout, with answer lines for solvers to write the unscrambled word.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Toggle "Include answer key" and a second page lists each scramble alongside its original word.
