Create Printable Word Scramble Worksheets from Any Word List
Quickly create free printable word scramble worksheets from any vocabulary list you already have — spelling words, topic terms, family names, or a revision list for next week's test.
Paste or type a list, pick how many scrambles to include, and the engine produces a clean two-column worksheet on an A4 or US Letter PDF. Every puzzle comes with an answer line next to it, and you can toggle the optional answer key for a teacher's second page.
This word scramble generator is built for teachers, tutors, homeschoolers, and parents who want a fast, flexible way to turn a word list into a proper printable puzzle — with no sign-up and no watermarks apart from the small PrintablesWorld brand mark.
Why use a word scramble worksheet?
Unscrambling jumbled letters forces a learner to think about letter patterns, common digraphs, and likely word shapes — all of which support spelling and reading fluency. A well-made scramble sheet doubles as vocabulary practice when you use topic words. Use it for:
- spelling list revision in a new format
- morning warm-ups and early finishers
- vocabulary practice for new topics
- EAL and ESL spelling work
- homework that does not feel like homework
- tutoring sessions with mixed-level groups
- family word-game printables
Because you supply the list, the puzzle is always relevant to what the learner is working on.
What you can customise
The generator gives you tight control without being fiddly. You can choose:
- Word list: Paste words one per line, or comma separated
- Word count: Print up to ten scrambles per worksheet
- Selection mode: FIRST takes words in order; RANDOM shuffles the selection
- Difficulty: Easy, medium, or hard scrambling
- Avoid original: Re-shuffle until the scramble does not match the source word
- Answer key: Print a teacher's second page with every solution
- Paper type: Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format
- Worksheet title: Keep the default or add your own
The defaults work for most lists, so if you just want a quick sheet you can paste words and click Generate.
Good word lists to try
Weekly spelling lists
Paste the week's spellings and you have an instant revision activity that feels fresh, not repetitive.
Topic vocabulary
Use terms from the current class topic — Romans, rainforests, rocks and soils — so the scramble doubles as subject revision.
Family names
A party-ready list of names and nicknames works well for family gatherings and birthdays.
High-frequency words
Build a small list of tricky high-frequency words for reading-intervention sessions.
Notes and limitations
- Words shorter than three letters are passed through unchanged because there is nothing meaningful to scramble.
- With Avoid original on, the engine re-shuffles up to twelve times; rare short words may still end up matching their source.
- RANDOM selection gives a new mix on each download, so two exports from the same list will usually differ.
- Printed output can vary slightly by printer and browser margin settings, so printing at 100% scale is recommended.
Who this is for
Teachers
Print a spelling-list scramble in minutes and keep the answer key for fast marking.
Parents
Turn the week's spellings into a cosy kitchen-table activity.
Homeschool families
Match scrambles to your current topic or spelling scheme without hunting for pre-made PDFs.
Tutors and SENCOs
Use scrambles for learners who find straight spelling tests discouraging; the puzzle framing lowers the stakes.

Worked example
Say your Year 4 class has this week's spellings: CALENDAR, FOREIGN, LIBRARY, NATURAL, RHYTHM, SPECIAL, THOUGH, WEATHER. Paste the list, set word count to 8, choose FIRST, keep difficulty MEDIUM, and toggle on the answer key.
The engine might print DANCELAR for CALENDAR, NIFOREG for FOREIGN, and so on, in a clean two-column layout with an answer line beside each scramble. The answer key page lists every scramble next to the original word so you can mark at a glance.
Methodology
The generator reads your list, trims blank lines, and takes n words using FIRST (in order) or RANDOM (shuffled) selection. Each word is then scrambled using a letter-shuffle routine, with the difficulty setting adjusting how aggressively letters move. With Avoid original on, it re-shuffles up to twelve times until the scrambled spelling differs from the source. The print layout uses the shared PrintablesWorld branded template, and the optional answer key prints on its own page.
Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing
Word scramble worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. The two-column layout fits up to ten scrambles on a single page on either paper size. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest type and clearest answer lines.
