Create Your Own Printable Custom Word Search
Quickly create a free printable custom word search from any list of words you choose — spelling words, topic terms, family names, pet names, birthday-party words, or any vocabulary your learner is working on this week.
Paste or type the words, pick a grid size, and the engine builds a puzzle on an A4 or US Letter PDF. An optional colour-coded solution page gives you a ready-made answer key for marking or sharing.
This custom word search maker is built for teachers who want a personalised sheet for a specific topic, homeschool parents tailoring a lesson to their child, tutors targeting tricky spellings, and party hosts making themed printables for birthdays and weddings.
Why build your own word search?
Pre-made puzzles are handy, but the most useful word searches are the ones that match exactly what a learner is working on right now. A custom sheet lines up with the week's spelling list, the topic vocabulary, or the names at a party table. Use it for:
- weekly spelling list revision
- topic vocabulary in any subject
- EAL and ESL vocabulary practice
- reading intervention with targeted high-frequency words
- birthday party placemats with guest names
- wedding and family reunion activity printables
- team-building icebreakers
- homeschool unit studies
Because the list is yours, the puzzle is always relevant — no searching for the "right" pre-made PDF.
What you can customise
Everything about the puzzle is under your control. You can choose:
- Word list: Type or paste words one per line; punctuation and spaces are ignored
- Grid size: From 10×10 for shorter lists up to 25×25 for longer or harder sets
- Directions: Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and backwards — on or off
- Case: Upper or lower case grid letters
- Solution page: Toggle the colour-coded answer grid
- Paper type: Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format
- Worksheet title: Use a class name, party theme, or any heading you like
For a typical 10- to 15-word list, a 15×15 or 20×20 grid with diagonals off is a comfortable default.
Word list tips
Use letters only
The engine ignores punctuation and spaces, so a word like "don't" becomes DONT in the grid. Two-word phrases such as "ice cream" are placed as one string (ICECREAM) — split them into separate words if you want them found individually.
Keep words within the grid size
A word can only fit if it is at most as long as the grid is wide. If a word is too long to place, it will be listed as Unplaced in the preview — either shorten it or grow the grid.
Mix word lengths for a better puzzle
A list with a mix of short and long words produces a denser, more satisfying grid than a list of all short words.
Aim for 10 to 15 words
Fewer than eight tends to feel sparse; more than twenty gets hard to place cleanly without a large grid.
Who this tool is for
Teachers
Paste the week's spellings or topic vocabulary and you have a ready-made self-marking activity.
Homeschool families
Match the puzzle to your current unit — Romans, rainforests, Roald Dahl — and print a fresh one as the topic evolves.
Tutors and SENCOs
Target a small set of tricky words for a one-to-one session without hunting for the "right" PDF online.
Party planners
Use guest names for a table placemat, or theme words for a birthday or hen-do printable.

Worked example
Say you are planning a Year 6 space topic. Paste in PLANET, ORBIT, GRAVITY, TELESCOPE, ASTRONAUT, COMET, GALAXY, NEBULA, METEOR, SATELLITE, ROCKET, ECLIPSE. Choose a 20×20 grid, turn diagonals and backwards on, keep upper-case letters, and toggle on the solution page. Title the worksheet "Our Solar System Word Search".
The engine places each word, fills the grid with random letters, and prints a word bank at the bottom. The solution page highlights each term in colour, ready for a quick reveal on the board.
Methodology
The generator cleans your word list (letters only, upper-cased for placement), then places each word onto the grid in one of the directions you allow, retrying if a placement clashes with another word. If a word cannot be placed after repeated attempts, it is listed as Unplaced so you can shorten the list or grow the grid. Remaining cells are filled with random letters. The solution page re-draws the grid with each word highlighted in its own colour. Everything renders through the shared PrintablesWorld branded template, so the sheet looks consistent with every other tool on the site.
Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing
Custom word search worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. Most 10- to 15-word lists fit comfortably on a 15×15 or 20×20 grid on either paper size. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest letter grid.
