A classic word game, ready to print

Hangman is the perfect five-minute filler: one player thinks of a word, the other guesses letters, and a stick figure appears one line at a time for every wrong guess. This generator turns that game into a tidy printable worksheet so a whole class, a car journey or a rainy afternoon is sorted in seconds. Each row gives you a set of blank underscores — one per letter of a hidden word — an A to Z alphabet bank to cross off as letters are tried, and a small gallows to draw on. The answers never appear on the playing sheet; they live only on the optional answer key, so the person holding the puzzle can run the game without spoiling it.

Every sheet is freshly shuffled from a curated word list, so you can print a different worksheet for each child, each group or each lesson without seeing the same words twice in a row.

How to play hangman

One player picks the hidden word; the other calls out letters one at a time. Correct letters get written into the matching blanks, and the guesser crosses that letter off the alphabet bank so it isn't called twice. Every wrong guess adds one line to the gallows drawing — first the base, then the post, the beam, the rope, and finally the figure. The guesser wins by completing the word before the drawing is finished; otherwise the word-setter wins. Using the printed alphabet bank keeps the game fair and stops the same letter being guessed over and over.

What you can customise

  • Word count — from a quick three-word warm-up to a full twelve-puzzle page.
  • Answer key — add a second sheet that reveals every hidden word for the game leader.
  • Name & date — include fields at the top for classroom use.
  • Worksheet title — rename it for a theme day, a supply lesson or a club.

How to use it

  1. Set the number of words and add a title if you like.
  2. Toggle the answer key and the Name/Date fields on or off.
  3. Preview the live PDF and press Generate New to reshuffle the words.
  4. Download or print — the branded, ready-to-use sheet prints on A4 or US Letter.

Why teachers and parents like it

Hangman quietly builds spelling, vocabulary and letter-recognition skills while feeling like pure play. Because each puzzle shows the exact number of letters, learners practise thinking about common patterns — vowels first, then frequent consonants — which transfers neatly to spelling and decoding. It is an ideal early-finisher activity, a calm transition between lessons, or a screen-free game for home. Print a stack at the start of term and you will always have a no-prep activity ready to hand.

FAQs

Quick answers

How do you play hangman on these sheets?

Pick the hidden word from the answer key, then have the other player guess letters one at a time. Write correct letters into the blanks, cross guessed letters off the alphabet bank, and add a line to the gallows for each wrong guess.

Where are the answers?

The hidden words never appear on the playing sheet. Turn the answer key on and the PDF adds a second page listing every word, so the game leader can run the puzzles without spoiling them.

How many words can I put on one sheet?

You can choose from three up to twelve words. Fewer words give larger, roomier puzzles; more words pack a full page for a longer session.

Can I make every worksheet different?

Yes. Each generation shuffles a fresh selection from the curated word list, so you can print a unique sheet for every pupil. Press Generate New to reshuffle the preview.
