The game, laid out so it survives a classroom

One row per puzzle: a set of blank underscores, one per letter of the hidden word, an alphabet from A to Z to cross off, and a small gallows.

The words never appear on the playing sheet. They live on the answer key alone, so the person running the game can hold the sheet, know the word, and not accidentally show it to the guesser, which is the failure mode of every hangman worksheet that prints the answer in small grey text at the bottom.

Three to twelve puzzles a page. Every generation reshuffles the list.

Playing it

One player knows the word. The other calls letters.

Correct letters get written into their blanks. Wrong ones add a line to the gallows: the base, then the post, the beam, the rope, and finally the figure. The guesser wins by finishing the word before the drawing finishes them.

The printed alphabet is the part that makes this work on paper. Crossing a letter off as it is called stops the same guess being made twice, which in a pair of seven-year-olds happens roughly every third turn and is the main source of argument.

What it quietly teaches

Because the blanks show exactly how many letters the word has, a good guesser stops calling letters at random and starts calling vowels first, then the common consonants.

That is letter-frequency reasoning, arrived at by playing rather than by being told, and it transfers straight into decoding an unfamiliar word in reading. The child who works out that guessing E first is a better bet than guessing Q has learned something about English that no spelling list would have taught them.

When to reach for it

Early finishers. The gap between a lesson and assembly. A car journey. A supply teacher's folder, where the whole point is an activity that needs no explaining and no equipment.

Print a stack at the start of term and there is always something ready. Set the title for a theme day or a club if the sheets are going into a folder, and turn on the name and date fields only if they are coming back.
