Print a Classic Memory Game with 6, 8 or 12 Pairs

Flip-and-match memory games build concentration, visual discrimination and turn-taking. This generator prints a shuffled grid of paired cards ready to cut, flip face-down and play.

Pick the number of pairs and the symbol set — letters, numbers, shape names or emoji-words — and download a print-ready PDF in A4 or US Letter. Every generation reshuffles the layout so each printout feels like a new game.

Designed for EYFS, KS1 teachers, SEN specialists, tutors and families who want a ready-to-play memory game without shop-bought card sets.

Why use this memory game generator?

A memory game is a low-prep, high-engagement activity that pupils love to repeat. Use it for:

  • EYFS attention-span activities
  • KS1 starter games and golden-time rewards
  • SEN concentration and working-memory practice
  • EAL vocabulary recall with shape and letter sets
  • wet-play and cover-lesson filler activities
  • early-finisher tables in KS1 and KS2
  • family game nights and birthday-party activities

The engine does the shuffling, so the game is fresh every time you print.

What you can customise

The settings keep the game quick to set up:

  • Pair count: 6, 8 or 12 pairs (12, 16 or 24 cards)
  • Symbol set: letters, numbers, shape names or emoji-words
  • Optional header label for a printed title
  • Paper size: A4 or US Letter
  • Optional card outline for cleaner cutting

The layout fits a single page at every pair count, so there's no extra pagination to worry about.

Notes and limitations

  • The PDF uses print-safe text glyphs rather than full-colour emoji, so the emoji-words set prints the word (e.g. "Star") instead of the picture.
  • For younger learners, start at 6 pairs and add more as attention grows.
  • Print on card stock and laminate for a class set that survives repeated play.
  • Cut along the gridlines — the engine leaves a small gutter between cards so a guillotine can cut straight through.

Who the memory game is for

This tool suits a wide range of ages and settings.

Parents

Print a set for home — rainy-day activities, quiet games before bed, or concentration practice for younger siblings.

Teachers

Brilliant for early-finisher tables, golden time, wet-play trays and starter games. Laminate once and reuse for the whole year.

Homeschool families

Mix up structured learning with a short memory game to refresh concentration and give younger learners a win.

Tutors

Useful as a quick attention-building warm-up before a focused session, especially with younger clients.

Symbol set options

Letters

Uppercase A–Z. Great for pre-readers learning letter recognition and for phonics group sessions.

Numbers

Digits 1–20. Useful for number-recognition practice in EYFS and Year 1.

Shape names

Square, triangle, circle, hexagon and so on. Combines shape vocabulary with memory work.

Emoji-words

Printed words like "Star", "Heart", "Moon" rather than full-colour emoji. Keeps the game cheerful without depending on printer colour.

How to use the tool

  1. Pick the pair count (6, 8 or 12).
  2. Choose a symbol set.
  3. Optionally add a header title.
  4. Pick A4 or US Letter.
  5. Click Generate Memory Game.
  6. Preview the shuffled grid.
  7. Download the PDF and print on card stock.
  8. Cut along the gridlines and laminate if you plan to reuse.

Worked example

A Reception teacher wants a starter activity that supports letter recognition. She picks 6 pairs and the Letters symbol set on A4 paper. The PDF prints a 3×4 grid of 12 cards, each showing a single uppercase letter, shuffled randomly.

She prints on card, laminates and guillotines the cards. During carpet time, pupils turn all 12 cards face-down and take turns flipping two at a time. When they find a matching letter pair they keep it. The game covers letter recognition, turn-taking and short-term memory in one five-minute activity.

Methodology

The engine selects the requested number of symbols, duplicates each one, Fisher-Yates shuffles the combined list, and paginates it into a single-page grid sized to the chosen pair count. The shared branded template adds the page header, footer watermark and QR code so the memory game matches the look of every other printable in your resource folder.

Helpful preset ideas

  • 6 pairs, Letters — EYFS letter recognition
  • 8 pairs, Numbers — KS1 number-matching
  • 12 pairs, Shape names — KS2 shape vocabulary
  • 6 pairs, Emoji-words — party games or wet-play
  • Laminated class set — reusable all year

Best ways to play

  • Start with fewer pairs and build up — the game gets hard fast.
  • Play in pairs or small groups so turn-taking is part of the activity.
  • Use a timer for a speed-memory variant with older pupils.
  • Mix symbol sets across several decks for variety.
  • Store each deck in a labelled zip-lock bag with a count.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

Both paper sizes are supported so teachers anywhere can print at 100% scale. The grid rescales automatically to fit the chosen paper, keeping the card size consistent and the gridlines easy to guillotine.

FAQs

Quick answers

Why emoji “words” instead of actual emoji pictures?

The PDF uses a print-safe standard font that does not always include full-colour emoji glyphs, so we label each pair with a word instead (e.g. “Star”, “Heart”). The game play is identical.

How many cards will I cut out?

Twice the pair count — so 12, 16, or 24 cards depending on the setting you pick.

Is the layout reshuffled each time?

Yes, each PDF randomises the card order so the game is fresh for every print.

Can I use this with very young children?

Yes. Start with 6 pairs and shape or letter cards; increase pair count as concentration builds.
