The same shape, several sizes, deliberately out of order

Each row holds one shape drawn at two to six different sizes, shuffled left to right. The child decides which is smallest and writes 1 under it, then 2, and on across the row.

The shuffle matters more than it looks. The generator checks whether a row has come out already in order, either ascending or descending, and reshuffles it if so. A row that happens to be sorted teaches nothing and a child who spots one will assume the next is sorted too.

One to eight rows on a page, four by default. Five shapes a row unless you change it.

Smallest first, or largest first

Both directions are available and the instruction line at the top of the sheet changes to match.

Switch between them on consecutive sheets. That single change catches every child who has been answering on autopilot rather than reading, which at this age is most of them at least once, and it is a far better diagnostic than making the shapes closer in size.

Boxes, or a blank sheet

A small numbered box prints under each shape by default. Turn the boxes off and the shapes stand alone, which suits an older child annotating freely, or a laminated copy being used with a dry-wipe pen where a printed box is only in the way.

Shapes are circles, squares, triangles, stars. Or Mixed, which changes shape on every row, and that is the harder sheet: the child cannot settle into comparing one kind of thing and has to re-anchor their judgement each time.

The answer key is off by default and prints the correct numbering in green on a second page.

Why ordering comes before measuring

Long before a ruler appears, a child has to be able to say that this one is bigger than that one and mean it consistently.

Ordering a set is the step after comparing a pair, and it is genuinely harder, because a middle shape is simultaneously bigger than one neighbour and smaller than another. Children who can compare two things confidently often stall on a set of five for exactly that reason, and working through several shuffled rows is what builds the comparison language along with the idea that an order has a direction.

Where it fits in a day

A warm-up at the start of a measurement unit. A maths-station task. Morning work while you take the register.

At home it is five screen-free minutes for a preschooler, and it needs no explanation beyond pointing at the first row. Laminate one copy for repeated use with a dry-wipe pen, or run several with the mixed-shape option so each child in a group has a visibly different page and there is nothing to copy.
