The French school ruling
Horizontal lines every 2 mm, with every fourth one drawn heavier — that heavier line is the writing baseline, and it falls every 8 mm. Faint verticals every 8 mm cross them to make the squares, and a coloured margin line sits about 15 mm in from the left.
Both the verticals and the margin can be turned off.
What the fine lines are for
They are not decoration and they are not a grid to write between. Each is a height reference.
A lowercase letter occupies one 2 mm interval. A letter with an ascender — l, h, b, d — runs up three intervals. Descenders drop two below the baseline. Capitals go to three. Every letter therefore has an exact height defined by the ruling, and a child writing on it produces letters in correct proportion without being told anything.
That is the entire pedagogical idea, and it is why Séyès paper is not simply narrow-ruled paper.
Why the squares
The 8 mm verticals give horizontal control — letter width, spacing between words, and a consistent slant for cursive.
French primary schools teach a joined script from the start, and the vertical lines are what keep the slope even across a line. They also make the paper usable for maths, which is why the same cahier serves both subjects.
Who wants it
Anyone following a French curriculum, at home or abroad, where the exercise books are simply not available locally. Families teaching French handwriting to bilingual children. Adults learning French cursive, which is a distinct script from the English one and looks it.
Also calligraphers and anyone practising a small, precise hand, since the 2 mm reference is more exacting than any English ruling.
Turning things off
Drop the verticals and you have very finely ruled lined paper with the same height references — useful once the slant is secure and the grid has become visual noise.
Drop the margin for a sheet used as a worksheet rather than as a notebook page.
Print at 100%
More important here than on most paper. The whole system depends on the 2 mm and 8 mm measurements being exactly that, and a page scaled to 94% by a printer's fit-to-page setting produces letters of the wrong height everywhere.
Check the first sheet against a ruler before printing thirty.

Quick answers
What is Séyès (French ruled) paper?
It is the standard grid printed in French exercise books. Fine horizontal lines every 2 mm with a heavier baseline every 8 mm, plus vertical lines every 8 mm forming a square grid. French pupils use it to learn even, well-proportioned cursive handwriting.
What do the four bands mean?
Each 8 mm writing space is split into four 2 mm bands by the fine lines. Lower-case letters fill one band, short ascenders reach two, tall ascenders (l, h, b) reach three, and descenders (g, p, y) drop one band below the baseline.
Can I turn off the vertical lines?
Yes. The vertical grid is on by default for the full Séyès look, but you can switch it off for a lines-only version that keeps just the 2 mm rules and 8 mm baselines.
Does it have the red margin?
Yes. A red vertical margin line about 15 mm from the left is on by default and can be turned off.
Will it print correctly on A4 and US Letter?
Yes. A4, US Letter, and US Legal are all supported, and the 2 mm / 8 mm spacing stays identical across sizes. Print at 100% scale with "fit to page" turned off.
Can I add a title or name line?
Turn on the heading option and type your own text, a name, a date, or a lesson label, and it prints at the top of the sheet above the grid.
Is this the same as grands carreaux?
Yes. The grands carreaux (big squares) cahier is the everyday Séyès ruling reproduced here: 8 mm squares divided into four 2 mm bands.
