Create Printable Spelling List Worksheets Using Look-Cover-Write-Check
Quickly create free printable spelling list worksheets built around the proven look-cover-write-check routine used across UK primary schools.
Download A4 or US Letter PDFs for classroom, homework and home-learning use. Each row prints the target word and three further columns: the student looks at the word, covers it, writes it from memory twice, then uncovers and self-checks. Use the built-in word list or paste any weekly spellings.
This spelling list generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers and tutors run structured spelling practice without having to re-make the same template week after week.
Why use this spelling list generator?
This tool produces clean, four-column practice sheets for any word list you need to learn. The look-cover-write-check method is a long-standing favourite because it combines visual memory, retrieval practice and self-marking in a single routine. Use it for:
- weekly KS1 and KS2 spelling homework
- Year 3 and Year 4 statutory word list practice
- Year 5 and Year 6 common exception word revision
- intervention and catch-up sessions
- SATs spelling preparation
- homeschool spelling routines
- tutor-led one-to-one sessions
It is especially useful when you want a quick, reusable template that works for any list the teacher sends home.
What you can customise
The generator keeps the interface focused:
- Word list: use the built-in list or paste a custom set (one per line or comma-separated)
- Word count: eight to sixteen words per page
- Name and date fields: turn on for classwork and homework
- Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF
- Worksheet title: set your own heading
Each row has four columns: the target word, a blank “write it” column, a second “write it again” column, and a “check” column for self-marking.
Notes and limitations
- No separate answer key is needed because the target word is printed in the first column for self-checking.
- Very long words may wrap awkwardly in the first column; keep most words under ten letters for best layout.
- Custom word lists can contain capitalised words, hyphens and apostrophes, which the engine preserves verbatim.
- Printed output varies slightly by printer and browser margin settings; print at 100% scale.

Worksheet mode options
Built-in list
A short curated list is provided for when you just need a quick template to print. Ideal for a starter lesson on the look-cover-write-check method.
Custom list
Paste a weekly list from school, a Year 3 or 4 statutory word list, or any set of words the learner needs to practise. The sheet rebuilds with your words.
Self-checking column
The final column in each row is for the student to uncover the target word and check their writing. This removes the need for a separate answer page.
How to use the tool
- Paste your word list or leave the built-in list selected.
- Set the word count (eight to sixteen).
- Toggle the name and date header if needed.
- Choose A4 or US Letter.
- Click Generate and preview the page.
- Download the PDF and print.
Worked example
For a Year 3 weekly spelling list, paste twelve statutory words such as “arrive”, “believe”, “caught”, “describe”, “eight” and the rest. The engine prints a page with twelve four-column rows. The child looks at “arrive”, covers the first column with a ruler, writes “arrive” in the second column from memory, writes it again in the third, then uncovers and self-checks in the fourth. This repeats for every word on the list.
Methodology
The generator takes the word list you provide, trims and normalises it, and lays each word into a four-column row on the shared branded PDF template. Row height is tuned so eight to sixteen words fit on one page comfortably. The target word prints in the first column, leaving three blank columns for the write-write-check steps of the routine.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing
This spelling list generator supports both A4 and US Letter paper sizes. Up to sixteen words fit on a single sheet in either format, giving plenty of room in each row for handwriting.
