Print Classic Dotted Letter Tracing Worksheets

Generate free printable dotted letter tracing sheets — the classic handwriting practice format where each letter is rendered as a faint dotted outline for the child to pencil over. The large ghost letters help early writers learn letter formation while building pencil control and fine motor strength.

Download as an A4 or US Letter PDF. Default practice covers all 26 uppercase letters on a wider 6mm band, but the sheet accepts any letters, words, the child's own name, or short sentences. Dotted tracing is the natural starting point for handwriting — the shape is visible, the trace is forgiving, and the child quickly builds confidence.

This is the sheet most commonly associated with the phrase "handwriting practice" in early-years education. It has been the staple of reception and Year 1 classrooms for decades, and for good reason: the dotted outline scaffolds the child perfectly from recognising a letter to forming it independently.

Why use dotted letter tracing?

The dotted outline gives just enough visual structure to guide the pencil without prescribing the exact path of each stroke. Children can over-trace with their own rhythm, lifting the pencil where they need to, while the ghost shape keeps the overall letter form correct. Use dotted tracing for:

  • first introduction to a new letter in EYFS reception
  • fine motor skills development in pre-school and nursery
  • pencil-grip practice — the slow trace forces a stable grip
  • KS1 consolidation of letter formation
  • name writing for the first few weeks of reception
  • SEN intervention for pupils building letter recognition
  • occupational therapy sessions on pre-writing skills, letter formation and bilateral coordination

The faint dotted outline is also forgiving — small mistakes still look successful to a young child, which keeps motivation high.

What you can customise

  • Letter set: full alphabet, focus letters, child's name, or a short word list
  • Font preset: Patrick Hand by default (friendly print style), plus other handwriting fonts
  • Trace style: dotted by default for the classic ghost outline
  • Rows per line: one or two trace rows plus copy rows — two traces is the default for early writers
  • Line height: 6mm band by default — wider than standard so letters feel big and manageable
  • Character guide boxes: turn on individual letter boxes to help spacing
  • Title, Name and Date strip for classroom organisation
  • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF

Who these worksheets are for

Parents

A gentle, reliable introduction to letter formation for toddlers and reception-age children. Ideal for a quiet activity at the kitchen table or as part of a bedtime routine.

Teachers (EYFS, KS1)

Perfect for phonics lessons, guided writing tables and independent tasks in the continuous provision. Also a dependable early intervention for children whose letter formation needs extra scaffolding.

Homeschool families

Use as your core handwriting sheet during the first two years of home-based early years learning. Swap the content in as your child progresses from letters to their own name to short words.

OT therapists and SEN support

Dotted tracing is a mainstay of paediatric OT plans. The dotted outline supports children with dyspraxia, hypermobility, visual-motor integration difficulties, and poor pencil grip. The larger band size reduces fine-motor demands.

Worked example

A reception teacher introducing the letters "s, a, t, p, i, n" (the first six letters of the Little Wandle phonics scheme) might set the title to "Phase 2 Letters", enter the practice text "s a t p i n", pick Patrick Hand at a 7mm band height, and choose two trace rows plus one copy row. The resulting A4 PDF prints two generous rows of dotted ghost letters for each focus letter, followed by a blank ruled row for independent writing. Each child completes the sheet over the course of the week as the letters are introduced in phonics sessions.

Methodology

The engine renders each trace letter in the selected handwriting font and then converts the letter outline to a faint dotted ghost shape. The dots are carefully spaced so the letter stays readable but is light enough for a child's pencil to visibly cover it. Guide lines render as the standard 4-line ruling — top, midline, baseline, descender — so letter proportions remain correct even when the band is widened.

Copy rows print with the ruling only. The shared branded PDF template applies the consistent header, footer, watermark and QR across every sheet.

How to use the tool

  1. Type the letters, words or sentences you want traced.
  2. Pick a friendly handwriting font (Patrick Hand is the default).
  3. Keep the trace style set to dotted for the classic ghost outline.
  4. Set trace and copy rows per line — two traces plus one copy suits early writers.
  5. Adjust the band height to 6mm or wider for younger hands.
  6. Choose A4 or US Letter paper.
  7. Click Generate and download.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

Print at 100% scale so letter proportions and band heights stay accurate. Dotted tracing works best when printed onto clean A4 or US Letter paper with a fresh toner cartridge so the ghost outline is crisp rather than smudged.

FAQs

Quick answers

What is a dotted trace?

Each trace letter is rendered as a faint dotted ghost so children can pencil over the top to learn the shape, then write a clean copy on the next line.

Are the letters extra-large?

Yes — the band height is preset wider than the standard sheet so each letter is bigger and easier for small hands to follow.

Which letters are included?

All 26 capitals by default, but you can edit the practice text to focus on a single letter, a child's name, or any short word.

What age is this for?

Ages 3+. The faint trace + larger lines suit the earliest stage of letter formation.
