Worked example

A reception teacher introducing the letters "s, a, t, p, i, n" (the first six letters of the Little Wandle phonics scheme) might set the title to "Phase 2 Letters", enter the practice text "s a t p i n", pick Patrick Hand at a 7mm band height, and choose two trace rows plus one copy row. The resulting A4 PDF prints two generous rows of dotted ghost letters for each focus letter, followed by a blank ruled row for independent writing. Each child completes the sheet over the course of the week as the letters are introduced in phonics sessions.

Methodology

The engine renders each trace letter in the selected handwriting font and then converts the letter outline to a faint dotted ghost shape. The dots are carefully spaced so the letter stays readable but is light enough for a child's pencil to visibly cover it. Guide lines render as the standard 4-line ruling — top, midline, baseline, descender — so letter proportions remain correct even when the band is widened.
