Whole sentences, traced then copied
Each sentence prints as a traceable model followed by a row to write on unaided, on the standard four-line ruling. The preset loads three sentences about careful writing; replace them with anything.
Sentences add what letters and words cannot
Letter sheets practise shapes. Word sheets practise joins. A sentence practises the two things that only exist across a full line.
Word spacing. Inside a word the letters set their own spacing. Between words nothing does, and children either run everything together or leave gaps you could park a car in. The usual guidance is a gap about one letter wide, and a sentence is the only place it can be practised.
Stamina. Handwriting deteriorates along a line before it becomes automatic. If the first four words are neat and the last three are not, that is endurance rather than letterforms — and the answer is shorter, more frequent sessions, not more correction.
The capital and the full stop
Both get forgotten, every time, by children who know the rule perfectly well.
That is not ignorance. It is attention: the hand is fully occupied with letterforms, and punctuation is the thing that drops off when there is no capacity left for it. Which means it will fix itself as the writing becomes automatic, and nagging about it early achieves very little.
Worth marking, worth mentioning once, not worth a lesson.
Choose sentences worth tracing
Each one is going to be written twice. The default affirmations are fine and nobody remembers them.
Better sources: a line from the book being read, a fact from the current topic, a joke, something the child said that you wrote down. Handwriting practice is one of the few school activities where the content is entirely free, and using it on filler is a waste.
Keep them to eight or ten words so no line wraps. A wrapped sentence breaks the practice at exactly the wrong point.
What you can change
The text, the font, whether letters join, trace style, rows per sentence, character boxes, ruling colour and line height. A4 or US Letter.
Trace style is the one to think about: a solid model to write over, a hollow outline to fill in, a dashed version, or arrows showing where each stroke begins.
Tracing is the easier half
Once these are comfortable, the copying sheet removes the model from under the pencil and puts it at the top of the page instead. That is a considerably harder task and the one that transfers to copying from a board.
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter.
FAQs
Quick answers
Can I use my own sentences?
Yes. Paste any short sentences into the practice text, one per line, and the engine builds trace-and-copy rows for each.
Which font is used?
Patrick Hand. A friendly print font that early writers can copy easily.
How are the rows organised?
Each sentence gets one solid trace row plus one copy row by default. Adjust under "Rows / sentence".
What about cursive sentences?
Try the cursive-sentences variant for joined writing instead of separate letters.
