Create Printable Sentence Tracing Worksheets with Dotted Model Lines
Generate free printable sentence tracing worksheets where each sentence prints as a faint dotted outline that the child traces directly over. No reading-to-writing transfer is required — the pencil simply follows the dots, letter by letter, word by word, across the full sentence.
Download as a print-ready PDF in A4 or US Letter. Use it as the bridge between individual word tracing and independent sentence copying, in early years classrooms, SEN sessions and home practice.
Sentence tracing is a critical step in early writing. It lets the child experience what it feels like to write a whole sentence — spacing between words, holding form across ten or more letters, and finishing with a full stop — without yet having to remember how each letter is shaped.
Why sentence tracing?
Tracing a whole sentence builds stamina and rhythm. It is one thing to trace a single word; it is quite another to keep the hand controlled across a full line. The dotted model provides the scaffold that lets this stamina develop before the child is expected to write freehand.
- bridging word-level tracing and sentence copying
- building writing stamina across a full line
- spacing practice between words
- punctuation placement — full stops, capitals, commas
- classroom copywork and morning work
- SEN and early intervention
- EAL / ELL writing support
Because the child's eyes travel along the dotted sentence rather than bouncing between a model and a blank line, tracing sentences also feels calmer than copying. It is a good choice for children who find open writing tasks overwhelming.
What you can customise
The generator gives you control over the sentence text, the tracing style and the number of rows.
- Practice text: Three default motivational sentences, or paste any sentences one per line.
- Font preset: Patrick Hand by default, with other handwriting fonts available.
- Writing style: Separate print letters or joined cursive.
- Trace style: Solid dotted model, plus dashes on the copy row if wanted.
- Rows per sentence: One trace row plus follow-up rows for repeated practice.
- Trace rows: Number of dotted trace rows per sentence.
- Worksheet title: Add your own heading.
- Paper type: A4 or US Letter PDF.
Increase Trace rows to 2 or 3 for children who need more repetitions before attempting a blank copy row.
Methodology
For each sentence, the engine renders the letters in the chosen handwriting font as a dotted outline sitting on the standard 4-line ruling — top line, midline, baseline and descender line. The dots are spaced so the pencil can traverse each letter in a single continuous stroke, following the natural letter-formation path.
After the dotted trace row, the engine prints a blank ruled row in the same 4-line band so the child can attempt the sentence freehand once the trace is complete. Longer sentences wrap onto a second dotted band automatically. Because the same 4-line ruling is used across every handwriting tool in this library, children feel at home whenever they switch between tracing, copying and free writing sheets.
Who these worksheets are for
Parents
Parents of 4-6 year olds can use the sheet for a short evening handwriting session. The dotted guide removes the anxiety of "what if I get it wrong" and lets the child focus on the feel of writing.
Teachers
Early years and Year 1 teachers can use it as a daily sentence starter: one new sentence each morning, traced as a warm-up before the rest of the literacy lesson.
Homeschool families
Homeschool parents can align the sentence text with the day's reading or topic, turning the tracing sheet into a vocabulary reinforcement as well as a handwriting task.
OT and SEN support
For children with dyspraxia, slow processing or fine motor delays, tracing a whole sentence gives motor practice without asking for extra cognitive load. The predictable 4-line ruling also helps children who struggle with letter sizing.
Worked example
A Reception teacher wants to start each Monday with a positive sentence. They open the sentence tracing worksheet, keep "I hold my pencil gently and write each letter clearly." as the first sentence, set Rows per sentence to 2 and Trace rows to 1, and choose A4.
The PDF prints the sentence once as a dotted trace row and once again as a blank ruled row for independent copy. The class traces first, then attempts the sentence freehand. By the end of a half term, the Monday sheets stack up into a visible diary of handwriting progress.
How to use the tool
- Open the sentence tracing worksheet generator.
- Keep the defaults or paste your own sentences.
- Pick a font preset for the dotted model.
- Set rows per sentence and trace rows.
- Choose A4 or US Letter paper.
- Add a worksheet title if needed.
- Click Generate and preview.
- Download the PDF and print at 100% scale.
Notes and limitations
- Dotted rendering looks best at 100% print scale — scaling to fit can blur the dashes.
- Very long sentences wrap onto a second ruled band; split the line manually if you want a specific break.
- For free copying rather than tracing, use the sentence copy practice sheet instead.
Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing
The sentence tracing worksheet supports both A4 and US Letter paper sizes. The 4-line ruling keeps the same proportions on either paper, so children experience consistent letter height whichever paper you use.

FAQs
Quick answers
Can I use my own sentences?
Yes. Paste any short sentences into the practice text — one per line — and the engine builds trace-and-copy rows for each.
Which font is used?
Patrick Hand — a friendly print font that early writers can copy easily.
How are the rows organised?
Each sentence gets one solid trace row plus one copy row by default. Adjust under "Rows / sentence".
What about cursive sentences?
Try the cursive-sentences variant for joined writing instead of separate letters.
