Create Printable Number Lines — Blank or Labelled

Generate free printable number lines for counting, skip-counting, addition, and subtraction. Choose a start, an end, and a step, then pick a labelled or blank line. Blank lines show only tick marks so learners add the numbers themselves — a genuine test of understanding.

Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format with an optional answer key (the labelled version of the same line). Suitable for UK Reception to Year 6 and US Kindergarten to Grade 5 depending on the range chosen.

Why use this number lines generator?

Number lines are the most powerful visual tool in primary maths. They help learners see numbers as positions, not just as quantities. Use the generator for:

    • early counting and skip-counting practice
    • visualising addition and subtraction as movements along a line
    • introducing fractions and decimals as positions between whole numbers
    • supporting negative-number work by extending the line to the left
    • building a visual bridge to coordinate-axis thinking

    What you can customise

    • Start: the leftmost number on the line
    • End: the rightmost number on the line
    • Step: the interval between tick marks (1 for counting, 2 or 5 for skip-counting, 10 for decade work)
    • Labelled or blank: show numbers under ticks, or leave the ticks empty for learners to fill in
    • Number of lines per page
    • Include answer key (the labelled version of a blank sheet)
    • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF

    Notes and limitations

    • The number of tick marks is determined by (end − start) / step, so very wide ranges with small steps may push tick density too high — widen the step or narrow the range if ticks start to overlap.
    • Blank lines still show the start and end numbers as anchors — without them the line has no reference.
    • Negative starts (e.g. from −10) are supported and render with the minus sign on labelled lines.
    • Print at 100% scale so tick spacing stays accurate.

Who these number lines are for

    Parents

Use blank number lines at home for count-up and count-back practice, or for “jump” subtraction.

    Teachers

Produce custom-ranged number lines for any topic — 0 to 20 for early addition, −10 to 10 for negative numbers, 0 to 100 in 5s for mental maths.

    Homeschool families

Number lines make abstract arithmetic concrete — essential for visual-learner routines.

    Tutors

Use blank number lines to assess whether a student can order and space numbers correctly, which reveals gaps that purely numerical work would miss.

    Worksheet style options

    Labelled lines

Numbers are printed under every tick mark. Best as a reference tool during calculation or as a first-look introduction.

    Blank lines

Only the start and end values are labelled. The student writes the numbers under the remaining ticks. Excellent for assessing understanding of step size and position.

    Skip-counting

Set the step to 2, 5, 10, or any other interval to produce skip-counting practice lines — a great complement to times-table fluency.

    How to use the tool

    1. Set the start and end values.
    2. Set the step size.
    3. Choose labelled or blank.
    4. Set the number of lines per page.
    5. Turn the answer key on if you want the labelled version to accompany a blank sheet.
    6. Choose A4 or US Letter.
    7. Generate and download the PDF.

    Worked example

For skip-counting in fives, set Start to 0, End to 50, Step to 5, and pick the Blank style. The PDF shows a number line with a tick mark every 5 units; 0 and 50 are labelled but everything between is empty. The student writes 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 under the remaining ticks. The answer key version shows every tick labelled.

    Methodology

The number-lines engine calculates the number of tick marks from (end − start) / step and draws them evenly across the horizontal axis. On labelled lines, every tick carries its value. On blank lines, only start and end are labelled. Arrow heads at both ends indicate the line continues conceptually. Every sheet is rendered through the shared branded PDF template.

    Helpful preset ideas

    • Start 0, End 10, Step 1, Labelled — first-count introduction
    • Start 0, End 20, Step 1, Blank — early fluency assessment
    • Start 0, End 100, Step 5, Blank — skip-counting mastery
    • Start −10, End 10, Step 1, Labelled — negative-number support
    • Start 0, End 10, Step 0.5, Labelled — decimals and halves

Best ways to practise with number lines

    • Use “jumps” on the line to model addition and subtraction physically before moving to written methods.
    • Ask learners to mark a specific number on a blank line — this tests true understanding of proportion and position.
    • Pair skip-counting number lines with times-table practice: counting in 3s is the 3 times table in a different coat.
    • Use a negative-to-positive line to make “taking away more than you started with” concrete.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Number lines scale correctly to both A4 and US Letter, with tick spacing preserved at 100% print scale.

    FAQs

    Quick answers

Are these number lines free to print?

Yes. You can generate and download printable number lines for free.

Can I choose the range and step?

Yes. Set the start, end and step size to match the topic you are teaching.

What is the difference between blank and labelled lines?

Blank lines only show tick marks so learners can add the values themselves. Labelled lines show the numbers under each tick.

Can I print in US Letter as well as A4?

Yes. Both A4 and US Letter paper sizes are supported.
