Create Printable Negative Numbers Worksheets for Signed Arithmetic Practice

Generate free printable negative-number worksheets that cover signed addition, signed subtraction and the "less than / equal to / greater than" comparison rules that trip learners up when zero is crossed on a number line.

The generator produces A4 or US Letter PDFs, with negative operands clearly written in brackets such as (−5) so the sign stays visible next to the operator. Every refresh produces a fresh set of problems.

This tool is aimed at Year 4–Year 7 and US Grades 4–7, where signed numbers are first introduced and extended into subtraction and comparison.

Why use this negative numbers generator?

Negative numbers are a common stumbling block, especially the two-sign rules around subtracting a negative. Concentrated practice on varied problems builds confidence. Use the generator for:

    • first lessons on negative numbers (temperature, bank balance contexts)
    • signed arithmetic in Year 5 and Year 6
    • Key Stage 3 consolidation
    • pre-algebra prep in US Grade 6 and 7
    • tutor sessions targeting sign errors

    What you can customise

    • Mode: Arithmetic, Compare, or Mixed
    • Minimum value (typically negative)
    • Maximum value
    • Number of problems
    • Answer key on or off
    • Paper size: A4 or US Letter

    Notes and limitations

    • Negative operands are shown in brackets with a minus sign — 7 − (−3) — to make the sign unambiguous.
    • Comparison problems ask the learner to fill in <, = or > between two values.
    • The two-column layout suits short problems; longer word problems are better handled by the Maths Word Problems generator.
    • Random mode means two exports at the same settings will differ.

    Who these worksheets are for

    Parents

Build familiarity with below-zero values through temperature and lift-floor style mental examples, backed up by printable practice.

    Teachers

Introduce signed arithmetic, then cement the rules with differentiated worksheets across a class.

    Homeschool families

Extend whole-number arithmetic into negatives at each child's own pace.

    Tutors

Target the exact rule — adding a negative, subtracting a negative, comparing across zero — that a learner is getting wrong.

    Worksheet style options

    Arithmetic mode

Pairs of signed values are combined with + or . This is the core mode for practising the two-sign rules.

    Compare mode

Two signed values are shown; the learner writes the correct comparison symbol between them. Excellent for developing number-line intuition.

    Mixed mode

Roughly half arithmetic and half comparison, useful once both have been taught and need reinforcing together.

    How to use the tool

    1. Pick a mode.
    2. Set the minimum and maximum values.
    3. Choose the problem count.
    4. Keep the answer key on if you want marking support.
    5. Choose A4 or US Letter.
    6. Click Generate Worksheet.
    7. Preview, then download the PDF.

    Worked example

With mode Arithmetic, min −10, max 10 and 20 problems, the generator might produce (−7) + 4, 3 − (−6) and (−5) + (−2). Applying the signed-arithmetic rules the answers are −3, 9 and −7 respectively, and these print on the matching answer key.

    Methodology

The engine draws two integers from the chosen minimum–maximum range, then either inserts an operator (Arithmetic) or inserts a blank for the comparison symbol (Compare). Negative values are wrapped in brackets when they follow an operator, so the display matches the classroom convention. The answer key recomputes each problem deterministically, so the marked page always matches the blank.

    Helpful preset ideas

    • Min −10, max 10, Compare — first lessons on ordering negatives
    • Min −20, max 20, Arithmetic — add/subtract practice
    • Min −50, max 50, Mixed — Year 7 consolidation
    • Answer key on for quick marking

Best ways to practise negative numbers

    • Sketch a quick number line next to the problem and count jumps left or right depending on the operation.
    • Say the two-sign rule aloud: "minus a minus is plus" — and "plus a minus is minus" as the companion rule.
    • Mix Compare and Arithmetic problems so learners do not lose the ordering intuition when they spend a whole session on arithmetic.
    • Connect to real-world contexts: temperature below freezing, lift floors below ground, or a bank balance in overdraft.
    • Use short regular sessions; negative-number errors are usually about habit, not understanding.
    • Talk through errors out loud — most sign mistakes come from rushing, not misconception.

A ten-minute daily session with a fresh worksheet is usually more effective than one longer weekly drill, because the two-sign rules are best reinforced little and often.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

The negative-numbers worksheet prints cleanly on A4 and US Letter. Print at 100% scale so the bracketed negatives do not clip at the page edge.

    FAQs

    Quick answers

    What modes are available?

Three — Arithmetic (add / subtract with negatives), Compare (fill in <, =, > between two numbers), and Mixed (half of each).

    How are negative numbers displayed?

Negative operands are shown in brackets with a minus sign, e.g. (−5), to make the sign easy to spot.

    Can I set the range?

Yes. Choose any minimum (negative) and maximum value to match your class level.

Does it include an answer key?

Yes. Turn on the answer key option to append the marked version of the sheet.
