Why use this phonics blends generator?
This tool produces consistent, printable blend practice for early readers. Repeated exposure to the same blend within one session is known to help children hear and produce the sound reliably. Use it for:
- EYFS and KS1 daily phonics sessions
- Year 1 phonics screening check prep
- targeted intervention for blends learners find tricky
- homework and take-home practice
- homeschool phonics routines
- tutor sessions with emerging readers
- morning work and literacy warm-ups
It is particularly helpful when a child is confident with single-letter sounds but needs structured practice with two- and three-letter blends.
What you can customise
The generator keeps options simple so you can print quickly:
- Blend selection: bl, br, cl, cr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr, tw, plus three-letter str and spr
- Word count: three to eight bordered rows per sheet
- Name and date fields: turn on for classroom use
- Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF
- Worksheet title: set your own heading
Each row prints the word in a clear reading font, a faint tracing copy, and a blank line to write it independently.
Notes and limitations
- The engine ships with five example words per blend, which keeps the sheet packed and age-appropriate.
- Custom blends are not supported at present; pick from the built-in list.
- Tracing guide quality depends on printer resolution — set the printer to at least 300 DPI for crisp outlines.
- Printed output varies slightly by printer and browser margin settings; print at 100% scale.

Worksheet mode options
Two-letter blends
Blends like bl, cr, sn and sp are the starting point for most phonics schemes. Example words are short and decodable, such as “black”, “crab”, “snail”, “spot”.
Three-letter blends
Blends like str and spr stretch more confident readers. Example words include “street”, “strong”, “spring”, “spray”.
Read, trace, write
Every row follows the same three-step routine: read the printed word aloud, trace the faint letters, then write the word on the blank line independently.
How to use the tool
- Pick the blend you want to focus on.
- Set the word count (three to eight).
- Toggle the name and date header if needed.
- Choose A4 or US Letter.
- Click Generate and preview the page.
- Download the PDF and print.
Worked example
For a Year 1 child practising the “bl” blend, choose blend “bl”, word count 5, name and date on. The engine prints a clean page with five bordered rows: black, blue, block, blanket and blend. Each row shows the word in a large reading font, a faint tracing copy beneath, and a blank line on the right for independent writing. The child reads each word, traces the light version, and writes it from memory.
Methodology
The generator holds a curated list of common consonant blends and, for each blend, five decodable example words. When you click Generate it selects the requested number of words, lays each one out as a read-trace-write row, and feeds the page through the shared branded PDF template. Row height, tracing line weight and spacing are chosen so early writers have room to form letters correctly.
