What this tool does
CVC practice: each row prints a three-letter word, a box to draw it in, and lines to write it. Pick one short vowel or a mixed sheet, four to ten words a page.

Three-letter words, one row each
Every row gives the word to read, a small box for a drawing, and lines to write it on. Four to ten words a sheet.
Choose a single short vowel — a, e, i, o or u — and the sheet uses only words with that vowel in the middle. Ten words are available for each, so a full page is possible on any one of them. A mixed sheet draws from all fifty.
One vowel at a time, and here is why
CVC words are how a child first experiences reading as blending rather than recognising: c-a-t said slowly, then faster, then as a word.
The consonants change easily. The vowel does not. Short e and short i are genuinely close in the mouth, and a child working on pen, pin, pan and pun on the same page is being asked to discriminate four sounds before any of them is secure.
Do one vowel until it is automatic. Then the next. Mixed sheets come after all five, as a check, not as the way in.
The drawing box is not decoration
It is the comprehension check. A child can blend mop perfectly and have no idea what a mop is, and nothing about reading it aloud reveals that.
The drawing does. It is also why the words on this sheet are all concrete and drawable — there is no point asking for a picture of led or wed, so those sit in the pool but the drawable ones dominate it.
Read, draw, write — in that order
Reading first, and out loud. Sound each letter, then blend. The child who says "c... a... t... cat" has done the work; the one who says "cat" instantly has recognised the shape and may not be decoding at all, which is worth knowing.
Then draw. Then write, which is the hardest part — hearing three sounds in a word and choosing a letter for each is the reverse operation and it lags reading by months.
Setting the sheet up
Vowel, word count from 4 to 10, a title, an instruction line you can rewrite, and optional Name and Date fields. A4 or US Letter.
Four words is a session for a four-year-old. Ten is a full page for a child who is nearly through this stage.
What comes next
Once all five vowels are secure, the next step is a consonant blend at the front — flat, trip, stop — which is what the blends sheets handle, one blend at a time on the same read-trace-write pattern.
Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter.
FAQs
Quick answers
What is a CVC word?
A three-letter word in the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, like "cat" or "dog". They are the building blocks of early reading.
Can I focus on one vowel?
Yes. Pick short A, E, I, O or U and the engine filters its bank to that vowel only. Great for systematic phonics work.
Why a drawing box?
Drawing the word's meaning helps children link sound, spelling, and concept. It is also fun.
How many words per page?
Four to ten words per sheet. Six is the comfortable default.

The order matters more than the materials, and one small thing, saying pure sounds rather than "buh" and "cuh", makes blending dramatically easier.
