Printable Numbers 1-20 Tracing Worksheets (Digits and Words)
Generate a free printable numbers 1-20 tracing worksheet that pairs each digit with its written form — "1 one", "2 two", "3 three" and so on — on standard 4-line ruling. Each row gives a trace pass followed by a copy row, so children build both the numeral shape and the written spelling at the same time.
Download in A4 or US Letter PDF for home learning, Reception and Year 1 classrooms, kindergarten and first-grade number work, or homeschool maths routines. There is no sign-up, and each regeneration produces a clean, print-ready sheet.
Numbers 1-20 are the range young learners meet first and use most often. Pairing the symbol with the spelling on every row helps children link the digit to the word, which matters for reading maths problems, understanding money, and decoding early story texts.
Why numerals and words together?
Children often learn to count long before they can read the written form of numbers. The teen numbers — 11 eleven, 12 twelve, 13 thirteen — are particularly tricky because the spoken and written forms do not follow the tens pattern that 20, 30, 40 will. Pairing each digit with its word on a tracing sheet lets learners:
- see both forms side by side while they trace
- practise the spellings of the tricky teens
- build the symbol-to-word mapping they need for word problems
- reinforce letter formation on common number words
- cover a broader range than a digits-only sheet
- see "teen" and "ty" patterns that appear again later
Typical uses include Reception and Year 1 maths, kindergarten and first-grade number word walls, homeschool counting sessions, tutoring, and SEN support for learners still connecting symbols to their names.
What you can customise
- Practice text: digit + word pairs 1-20 by default, edit to focus on trickier ranges
- Font preset: Patrick Hand for child-friendly numerals and letters
- Writing style: separate print or joined cursive
- Trace style: solid or dotted model text
- Rows per sentence: two by default, so one trace plus one copy row
- Trace rows: one or more modelled rows per line
- Character boxes: on or off
- Paper type: A4 or US Letter PDF
- Worksheet title: your own heading
To focus on just the teens, replace the default list with lines 11-19 repeated across multiple rows.
Who these worksheets are for
Parents
Use the sheet for counting practice at home, particularly around the teen numbers where most children stall briefly.
Teachers
Produce number-word practice for daily maths starters, or laminate a copy as a desk reference that shows the written form of every number 1-20.
Homeschool families
Combine the sheet with counting games and money play. Regenerate a fresh sheet whenever repetition is useful.
Occupational therapists and SEN specialists
Use the pairing format for learners who need explicit symbol-to-word mapping. The trace-then-copy structure reinforces recognition as well as writing.
How the sheet renders
Each line of the practice text is rendered as a single trace row in the chosen font, with one or more copy rows beneath on the same 4-line ruling. Digits sit between the midline and base where appropriate, and the word follows with standard letter heights. The page paginates automatically — if you extend the list to 30, 40 or beyond, the engine simply adds more pages.
Worked example
A Year 1 teacher is running a teen-numbers focus lesson. They want a worksheet that covers 11 through 20 without the clutter of 1-10. They open the tool and edit the practice text to "11 eleven", "12 twelve", "13 thirteen", "14 fourteen", "15 fifteen", "16 sixteen", "17 seventeen", "18 eighteen", "19 nineteen", "20 twenty" on ten lines.
They keep Patrick Hand as the font, separate print as the writing style, solid trace, Rows per sentence at 2, Trace rows at 1, and paper at A4. The generated PDF gives a full page of ten trace-and-copy blocks — one for each teen number — which works perfectly as a 15-minute lesson where the class traces and copies each number in turn as the teacher calls them out.
How to use the tool
- Keep the default 1-20 list, or edit to focus on a specific range.
- Choose the font and writing style.
- Set trace style and character boxes.
- Set Rows per sentence and Trace rows.
- Pick A4 or US Letter.
- Click Generate and preview.
- Download and print at 100% scale.
Methodology
The engine treats each line — for example "13 thirteen" — as a single string of practice text. It renders that string in the chosen font across the trace row, then leaves blank copy rows on the same 4-line ruling. Because digit widths and letter widths differ, the engine lets the row wrap if it runs out of space, which keeps the layout readable even for longer words like "seventeen" or "nineteen". The shared branded template applies the page header, footer and watermark.
Designed for A4 and US Letter printing
The worksheet exports in A4 and US Letter PDF, so it prints on any standard home or school printer. Print at 100% scale to keep the 4-line ruling heights accurate and the digit-to-word spacing as modelled.

FAQs
Quick answers
Why include the number words?
Pairing each digit with its written form helps early learners link the symbol to its spelling — especially useful for the tricky teens.
Can I switch to digits only?
Yes. Edit the practice text to leave only the numerals, or only the words.
Does it support numbers above 20?
You can extend the list as far as you like. Add new lines for 21, 22 and beyond — the engine paginates automatically.
What font does it use?
Patrick Hand — clear, child-friendly numerals that match common reception / kindergarten letter schemes.
