Create Printable Add and Subtract Fractions Worksheets

Generate free printable add and subtract fractions practice covering the three stages pupils meet: same denominators, different denominators (requiring a lowest common denominator), and a mixed set that combines both.

Create worksheets in A4 or US Letter PDF format for Years 4 through 6 (UK) or Grades 4 through 6 (US). Every answer is simplified to lowest terms, and the answer key lets you mark fast.

This add and subtract fractions generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers, and tutors give learners targeted practice on each step of fraction arithmetic, from same-denominator addition to full LCD work.

Why use this add and subtract fractions generator?

Fraction arithmetic is one of the biggest sources of errors in primary maths. The trick is to separate the subskills — same denominators first, then LCD — and drill each until the method is automatic. Use it for:

    • Year 4 introduction to same-denominator addition
    • Year 5 consolidation of different denominators
    • Year 6 SATs-style revision
    • tutor sessions on LCD and simplifying
    • homeschool progression through the fraction curriculum

Single-mode sheets let you drill the exact stage the learner is on; mixed sheets mirror exam-style questions.

    What you can customise

The generator offers direct control over the difficulty and focus of the sheet:

    • Mode: Same denominators, Different denominators, or Mixed
    • Operation: Add only, Subtract only, or Mixed
    • Max denominator: Caps the largest denominator used (keeps LCDs manageable)
    • Question count: How many problems fit on the page
    • Include answer key: Appends a page with each answer in simplest form
    • Worksheet title, name and date fields
    • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF

Subtraction problems are arranged so the answer is never negative, which keeps the focus on the fraction method rather than signed numbers.

    Notes and limitations

    • All answers are reduced to lowest terms in the answer key, including results that simplify to a whole number.
    • Subtraction always gives a non-negative result — the first fraction is chosen to be at least as big as the second.
    • The LCD is computed from the two denominators using lowest common multiple; very large denominators can produce large LCDs, so keep Max denominator sensible.
    • This tool works with proper fractions only. For multiply/divide with improper fractions, use the sibling Multiply & Divide Fractions tool.

    Who these worksheets are for

Adding and subtracting fractions is a staple of upper primary maths, so the tool targets Year 4 through Year 6 and their equivalents.

    Parents

Provide clear, reliably simplified practice for homework and revision without buying extra workbooks.

    Teachers

Produce single-skill sheets for teaching the method, then mixed sheets for end-of-unit assessment.

    Homeschool families

Follow the same-denominator → different-denominator → mixed progression over several weeks at the learner's pace.

    Tutors

Target the stage where most pupils stall — different denominators — with a dedicated single-mode sheet.

    Worksheet style options

    Same denominators

Both fractions share the same denominator, so the learner simply adds or subtracts the numerators and simplifies. Best for Year 4 introduction.

    Different denominators

The two fractions have different denominators; the learner finds the LCD, converts both fractions, then adds or subtracts. Best for Year 5 to Year 6.

    Mixed

Mixed mode rotates between same-denominator and different-denominator problems, which mirrors exam papers.

    Add-only or subtract-only

Narrow the operation to drill one method at a time. Subtract-only is particularly useful when the LCD step is new.

    How to use the tool

    1. Choose the mode: same denominators, different denominators, or mixed.
    2. Choose the operation: add, subtract, or mixed.
    3. Set Max denominator to control difficulty.
    4. Pick the number of questions per sheet.
    5. Turn Include answer key on or off.
    6. Choose A4 or US Letter paper.
    7. Click Generate to preview the worksheet.
    8. Download the PDF.

    Worked example

Pick Mode = Different denominators, Operation = Mixed, Max denominator = 12. You might see "1/3 + 1/4". The LCD is 12, so this becomes 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12, already in lowest terms.

    A subtract question on the same settings might read "5/6 − 1/4". The LCD is 12, so this becomes 10/12 − 3/12 = 7/12. A same-denominator question might read "3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8" which simplifies to 1/2 in the answer key.

    Methodology

The engine picks the two fractions within your Max denominator. For same-denominator mode, both denominators are identical. For different-denominator mode, the engine picks denominators whose lowest common multiple is manageable. Subtraction problems are arranged so the first fraction has the larger value, guaranteeing a non-negative answer. Every answer is reduced using the greatest common divisor, and the key records the simplified form.

    Helpful preset ideas

    • Same denominators, add only, Max denominator 10, for Year 4 introduction
    • Same denominators, mixed operation, Max denominator 12, for Year 4 consolidation
    • Different denominators, mixed operation, Max denominator 10, for Year 5
    • Mixed mode, Max denominator 12, for Year 6 SATs revision

Best ways to practise adding and subtracting fractions

    • Always write the LCD above the working before converting.
    • Simplify at the end — don't forget it's worth a mark.
    • Master same denominators fully before moving to different denominators.
    • Check subtraction answers make sense — a small fraction taken from a bigger one should give a non-negative result.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Fraction arithmetic worksheets are produced as A4 or US Letter PDFs, so UK and US classrooms get the same reliable layout. Question spacing and workings room rescale to the chosen paper.

    FAQs

    Quick answers

    Do the answers come simplified?

Yes — the answer key simplifies each sum / difference down to its lowest terms.

    Can the answer be negative?

No. Subtraction problems are arranged so the first fraction is always at least as big as the second.

    Is there an answer key?

Yes. Turn on "Include answer key" and the PDF will add a second page with simplified answers.

Which age group is this for?

Typically Years 4–6 (UK) or Grades 4–6 (US), where adding and subtracting fractions is introduced.
