Create Printable Multiply and Divide Fractions Worksheets

Generate free printable fraction multiplication and division practice, with support for both proper and improper fractions and every answer fully simplified.

Create worksheets in A4 or US Letter PDF format for Years 5 through 8 (UK) or Grades 5 through 7 (US). Pick multiplication only, division only, or a mixed set, and choose whether to allow improper fractions.

This multiply and divide fractions generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers, and tutors drill the two key procedures — multiply across numerators and denominators, and divide by the reciprocal — without the distraction of mixed-number conversion unless you want it.

Why use this multiply and divide fractions generator?

Fraction multiplication is straightforward but easy to rush; division trips pupils up because they forget to flip the second fraction. Drill-style practice builds the habits that survive under exam pressure. Use it for:

    • Year 5 introduction to multiplying fractions by fractions
    • Year 6 SATs revision of "keep, change, flip"
    • Key Stage 3 consolidation with improper fractions
    • tutor work on reciprocals and simplification
    • homeschool progression after add and subtract fractions

Single-operation mode drills one method, mixed mode tests the learner's ability to pick the right procedure.

    What you can customise

The generator keeps settings focused on the fraction arithmetic itself:

    • Operation: Multiply only, Divide only, or Mixed
    • Include improper: Allow top-heavy fractions in inputs and outputs
    • Max numerator / denominator: Caps the size of each fraction
    • Question count: How many problems fit on the page
    • Include answer key: Appends a page with every answer reduced to lowest terms
    • Worksheet title, name and date fields
    • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF

Every answer is reduced using the greatest common divisor, so the answer key always shows the fraction in its simplest form.

    Notes and limitations

    • With Include improper off, both input fractions and all answers are proper — ideal for first lessons.
    • With Include improper on, top-heavy fractions can appear in the problem and the answer; a result like 7/4 is shown as-is rather than as a mixed number.
    • Division is performed internally as multiplication by the reciprocal, then simplified — the approach we teach pupils.
    • This tool does not include mixed-number conversion; keep your practice focused on improper form.

    Who these worksheets are for

Multiplying and dividing fractions sits across late primary and early secondary, and this generator is useful across that span.

    Parents

Support homework and revision with clear, simplified printable practice that matches UK and US curriculum steps.

    Teachers

Produce single-operation drills for teaching each method, then mixed sheets for assessment.

    Homeschool families

Move from multiply only → divide only → mixed, and then introduce improper fractions as learners progress.

    Tutors

Target "forgot to flip" errors with a dedicated divide-only sheet, or drill cross-cancellation with multiply-only practice.

    Worksheet style options

    Multiply only

Multiply across numerators and denominators, then simplify. Cross-cancellation before multiplying is often the quickest method; either is accepted.

    Divide only

Keep the first fraction, change divide to multiply, flip the second fraction (take the reciprocal), then multiply and simplify. A dedicated divide-only sheet is the fastest way to build this habit.

    Mixed

Mixed mode rotates multiply and divide questions, which mirrors exam papers and forces the learner to identify the correct procedure.

    Improper fractions

Turn Include improper on to allow top-heavy fractions. Useful once the basic method is secure and for Key Stage 3 practice.

    How to use the tool

    1. Choose the operation: multiply, divide, or mixed.
    2. Decide whether to include improper fractions.
    3. Set Max numerator / denominator to cap the fraction size.
    4. Pick the number of questions per sheet.
    5. Turn Include answer key on or off.
    6. Choose A4 or US Letter paper.
    7. Click Generate to preview the worksheet.
    8. Download the PDF.

    Worked example

Pick Operation = Mixed, Include improper off, Max denominator 8. You might see "2/3 × 3/4". Multiplying across gives 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2.

A divide question on the same settings might read "3/5 ÷ 1/2". Keep the 3/5, change to multiply, flip the 1/2 to 2/1, giving 3/5 × 2/1 = 6/5. With improper answers allowed, the answer key shows 6/5; with improper off, the engine picks values that keep results proper.

    Methodology

The engine picks numerator and denominator pairs within your Max settings. Multiplication is performed across numerators and denominators, with the result reduced by the greatest common divisor. Division is performed as multiplication by the reciprocal of the second fraction, then reduced. When Include improper is off, the engine re-rolls values until both inputs and the answer stay proper.

    Helpful preset ideas

    • Multiply only, Improper off, Max denominator 8, for Year 5 introduction
    • Divide only, Improper off, Max denominator 8, for Year 6 method focus
    • Mixed, Improper off, Max denominator 10, for Year 6 SATs revision
    • Mixed, Improper on, Max denominator 12, for Key Stage 3 practice

Best ways to practise multiplying and dividing fractions

    • Write every division as the equivalent multiplication before multiplying.
    • Always simplify at the end — look for common factors even if they seem small.
    • Try cross-cancelling before multiplying to keep numbers manageable.
    • Master proper fractions first, then turn Include improper on for stretch.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Multiply and divide fractions worksheets are produced as A4 or US Letter PDFs so UK and US classrooms can print without rescaling. Spacing for working-out adjusts to the chosen paper size.

    FAQs

    Quick answers

    Are answers simplified?

Yes. Every answer is reduced to its lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.

    Can I include improper fractions?

Yes. Toggle "Include improper" on to allow top-heavy fractions in both inputs and outputs.

    What does division do internally?

Division multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second, then simplifies.

    Can I practise multiplication only?

Yes. Set Operation to Multiply. Use Mixed for combined practice.
