Create Printable Place Value Worksheets: Identify, Expand, and Compose
Generate free printable place value worksheets covering the three core place-value skills: identifying the place of a digit, writing a number in expanded form, and composing a number from its expanded form. Choose the digit count (3 to 6) and download with an answer key.
Available in A4 or US Letter PDF format, with comma separators on thousands and above for readable large numbers. Ideal for UK Year 2–6 and US Grade 2–5.
Why use this place value worksheet generator?
Place value is the most important concept in primary maths — every other arithmetic technique depends on it. A student who truly understands that the 3 in 347 means three hundreds will never line up decimal points incorrectly or put a column-addition carry in the wrong place. Use the generator for:
- teaching the value of each digit for the first time
- practising expanded form (300 + 40 + 7)
- composing numbers back from their parts
- extending from 3-digit numbers through to 6-digit numbers
- supporting students who make column-alignment errors in arithmetic
What you can customise
- Mode: Identify the place of a digit, Expand a number into parts, or Compose a number from parts
- Digit count: 3, 4, 5, or 6
- Number of problems per page
- Include answer key
- Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF
- Name and date fields
Notes and limitations
- This generator focuses on whole-number place value. For decimal place value, pair it with the Rounding Numbers or Decimals Worksheets generators.
- Numbers with thousands or above are displayed with comma separators (e.g. 42,857) so large numbers stay readable.
- Expanded form is written with plus signs: 40,000 + 2,000 + 800 + 50 + 7. It is not written in word form.
- Print at 100% scale.
Who these worksheets are for
Parents
Cement the place-value foundation at home with a quick sheet that targets the exact digit count your child is working on.
Teachers
Differentiate easily — same mode, different digit count — so every student gets practice at the right level.
Homeschool families
Build a progressive place-value unit from 3-digit numbers through to 6-digit numbers across several weeks.
Tutors
Spot misconceptions quickly: a student who cannot compose 5,000 + 300 + 70 + 2 has a deeper gap worth addressing.
Worksheet style options
Identify mode
The student is shown a number with one digit highlighted (e.g. 47,852) and asked to name its place value — in this case, “thousands” or “7,000”. Perfect for checking understanding of columns.
Expand mode
The student rewrites a number in expanded form. For 47,852 the answer is 40,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 50 + 2. This cements the multiplicative nature of place value.
Compose mode
The reverse of expand: the student is given 40,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 50 + 2 and writes 47,852. This is the skill students need for reading and writing large numbers accurately.
How to use the tool
- Pick the mode: Identify, Expand, or Compose.
- Choose the digit count (3–6).
- Set the number of problems.
- Turn the answer key on if needed.
- Choose A4 or US Letter.
- Generate and download the PDF.
Worked example
Set Mode to Expand and Digit count to 5. The generator might produce 68,143. The student writes 60,000 + 8,000 + 100 + 40 + 3. The answer key confirms this expansion. Next, switch Mode to Compose and the student might see 90,000 + 2,000 + 500 + 60 + 7 and need to write 92,567.
Methodology
The place-value engine generates a random whole number with the chosen number of digits (ensuring the leading digit is never zero). In Identify mode it highlights one digit and asks for its place; in Expand mode it prints the number and asks for the expansion; in Compose mode it prints the expansion and asks for the number. All numbers are formatted with comma separators for readability and every sheet is rendered through the shared branded PDF template.
Helpful preset ideas
- Identify, 3 digits, 20 problems — early Year 2/3
- Expand, 4 digits, 15 problems — Year 3/4 consolidation
- Compose, 5 digits, 15 problems — Year 5 fluency
- Identify, 6 digits, 20 problems — stretch for Year 6
Best ways to practise place value
- Read numbers aloud using place-value language: “four ten-thousands, seven thousands, eight hundreds, five tens, two”.
- Use a place-value chart alongside the worksheet when introducing 5- and 6-digit numbers.
- Alternate Expand and Compose — the inverse practice reveals misconceptions quickly.
- Link place value to column addition and subtraction immediately so students see why it matters.
Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing
The layout works in both A4 and US Letter, with larger numbers scaled so the comma separators stay clearly visible when printed at 100% scale.
