Worksheet style options

Identify mode

The student is shown a number with one digit highlighted (e.g. 47,852) and asked to name its place value — in this case, “thousands” or “7,000”. Perfect for checking understanding of columns.

Expand mode

The student rewrites a number in expanded form. For 47,852 the answer is 40,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 50 + 2. This cements the multiplicative nature of place value.

Compose mode

The reverse of expand: the student is given 40,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 50 + 2 and writes 47,852. This is the skill students need for reading and writing large numbers accurately.

How to use the tool

Worked example

Set Mode to Expand and Digit count to 5. The generator might produce 68,143. The student writes 60,000 + 8,000 + 100 + 40 + 3. The answer key confirms this expansion. Next, switch Mode to Compose and the student might see 90,000 + 2,000 + 500 + 60 + 7 and need to write 92,567.

Methodology

The place-value engine generates a random whole number with the chosen number of digits (ensuring the leading digit is never zero). In Identify mode it highlights one digit and asks for its place; in Expand mode it prints the number and asks for the expansion; in Compose mode it prints the expansion and asks for the number. All numbers are formatted with comma separators for readability and every sheet is rendered through the shared branded PDF template.
