Create Printable Time Calculation Worksheets with Elapsed Time and Clock Reading

Generate free printable time worksheets that cover the four core time skills: reading an analogue clock face, calculating elapsed time between two moments, adding a duration to a start time, and subtracting a duration from an end time — including durations that cross midnight.

The generator produces A4 or US Letter PDFs with a matching answer key. The worksheet can be set to 12-hour (am/pm) or 24-hour notation, and clock-reading problems print a small drawn clock face with hour and minute hands.

This tool suits UK Year 2–Year 6 and US Grades 2–5, where telling the time, reading timetables and calculating durations appears throughout the primary curriculum.

Why use this time calculations generator?

Time sums are awkward because they work in base 60 rather than base 10 — 45 + 30 minutes is not 75 but 1 hour 15. Regular printable practice is the fastest way to build that instinct. Use it for:

    • reading analogue clocks to the nearest minute
    • elapsed-time questions on timetables
    • duration arithmetic across midnight
    • moving between 12-hour and 24-hour notation
    • SATs reasoning paper time questions

    What you can customise

    • Mode: Elapsed, Add duration, Subtract duration, Clock reading, or Mixed
    • 12-hour or 24-hour notation
    • Minute granularity (5-minute, 1-minute, or quarter-hour)
    • Problem count
    • Answer key on or off
    • Paper size: A4 or US Letter

    Notes and limitations

    • Clock-reading problems print a small analogue face with hour and minute hands drawn to scale.
    • Durations may cross midnight — "09:50 pm + 2 h 30 min" gives 12:20 am the next day.
    • In 12-hour mode, answers include "am" or "pm" where relevant.
    • In 24-hour mode, answers use the HH:MM format.
    • Random mode means two exports at the same settings will differ.

    Who these worksheets are for

    Parents

Support school time-telling practice at home with fresh worksheets that avoid the familiar textbook examples.

    Teachers

Print morning warm-ups, plenaries, and revision sheets on any of the four time sub-skills.

    Homeschool families

Teach analogue-clock reading and duration arithmetic without a dedicated workbook.

    Tutors

Target specific problem types — durations across midnight are a common SATs stumbling block.

    Worksheet style options

    Clock reading

Each question shows a small analogue clock face; the learner writes the time in digital form.

    Elapsed time

Two times are given; the learner works out how long between them, expressed as hours and minutes.

    Add duration

A start time and a duration are given; the learner writes the end time.

    Subtract duration

An end time and a duration are given; the learner writes the start time.

    Mixed

Draws evenly from every time-calculation category. Best once each has been taught.

    How to use the tool

    1. Choose a mode.
    2. Toggle 24-hour format on or off.
    3. Pick the minute granularity.
    4. Choose the problem count.
    5. Keep the answer key on for marking support.
    6. Choose A4 or US Letter.
    7. Click Generate Worksheet.
    8. Preview, then download the PDF.

    Worked example

With mode Elapsed and 12-hour notation, a problem might read "A film starts at 7:35 pm and ends at 9:20 pm. How long is the film?". Counting up gives 25 minutes to 8:00, then 1 hour 20 minutes more, for a total of 1 h 45 min. With mode Add duration in 24-hour notation, a problem might read "Start at 22:40 and add 3 h 45 min"; the answer is 02:25 the next day.

    Methodology

Times are stored internally as minutes past midnight (0–1439). For Elapsed mode the engine picks two times and prints the difference as H h M min. For Add and Subtract modes it samples a start/end time and a duration, then formats the result using modulo 1440 so durations can wrap around midnight. Clock-reading questions pick a time to the chosen granularity and render hour and minute hands at the correct angles on a small vector clock face. All answers are recomputed from the same stored values for the answer key.

    Helpful preset ideas

    • Clock reading, 12-hour, 5-minute granularity — Year 2 analogue practice
    • Elapsed time, 12-hour — Year 4 fluency drill
    • Add duration, 24-hour — Year 6 SATs preparation
    • Mixed, 1-minute granularity — challenge extension

Best ways to practise time calculations

    • Count up in friendly chunks: reach the next o'clock first, then add the remaining minutes.
    • Draw a short timeline for tricky elapsed-time problems.
    • Convert 24-hour times to 12-hour mentally by subtracting 12 from any hour above 12.
    • Practise durations that cross midnight once the easier ones are secure.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Time worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. Clock-face diagrams scale correctly on both sizes. Print at 100% scale so the hands stay proportioned.

    FAQs

    Quick answers

Can I mix different types of time problems?

Yes. Choose the Mixed mode and the worksheet draws from every category — elapsed time, duration arithmetic, and clock reading.

Are the clock faces drawn in the PDF?

Yes. Clock-reading questions include a small analog clock diagram with hour and minute hands.

    Can I use 24-hour format?

Yes — toggle Use 24-hour to switch between 12-hour (am/pm) and 24-hour notation.

Do I get an answer key?

Yes. Keep Include answer key on and the PDF appends a matching answers page.
