What this tool does

Generate printable fact-family practice. Each cell shows three related numbers (like 4, 6, 10 or 3, 4, 12) and four blank lines for the student to write the related facts. Choose add/subtract, multiply/divide, or a mix, and download with an optional answer key.

Create Printable Fact Family Worksheets for Inverse Operations

Generate free printable fact-family worksheets that help students see how addition links with subtraction and how multiplication links with division. Each cell shows three related numbers and four blank lines for the learner to write the four related facts.

Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format with an optional answer key. Designed for UK Year 2–5 and US Grade 2–4 learners who are building fluency in inverse operations.

Why use this fact families generator?

Fact families make the inverse relationship explicit: if you know 4 + 6 = 10, you also know 10 − 4 = 6 and 10 − 6 = 4. This is the foundation of mental subtraction and mental division. Use the generator for:

  • introducing inverse operations for addition/subtraction
  • extending the same idea to multiplication/division
  • supporting struggling learners who treat + and − as unrelated
  • reinforcing times tables by showing the matching division facts
  • preparing for algebra readiness through implicit missing-number thinking

What you can customise

  • Family type: Add/Subtract, Multiply/Divide, or Mixed
  • Max number: the largest sum or product allowed
  • Number of problems per page
  • Include answer key with all four facts per family
  • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF
  • Name and date fields

Notes and limitations

  • Every addition/subtraction family uses three distinct numbers — the generator avoids doubles like 5+5=10 because those produce only two unique facts, not four.
  • Multiplication/division families likewise avoid squares (3×3=9) for the same reason.
  • The three related numbers are presented as a set; the student decides how to arrange them into the four equations.
  • Print at 100% scale.

Who these worksheets are for

Parents

Help your child see that subtraction is just addition in reverse — fact families make this concrete.

Teachers

Use as a bridge between addition/subtraction units and as a pre-test warm-up for multiplication/division.

Homeschool families

Integrate fact families into your daily arithmetic routine to save weeks of later reteaching.

Tutors

If a student knows 3 × 8 but struggles with 24 ÷ 3, fact families are the fastest fix.

Worksheet style options

Add/Subtract families

Shows three numbers like 4, 6, 10. The student writes 4 + 6 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 − 4 = 6, and 10 − 6 = 4.

Multiply/Divide families

Shows three numbers like 3, 4, 12. The student writes 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

Mixed

Randomises between the two types so learners must recognise which operation family applies before writing the four facts.

How to use the tool

  1. Pick the family type: Add/Subtract, Multiply/Divide, or Mixed.
  2. Set the max number for the sum or product.
  3. Choose the number of problems on the page.
  4. Turn the answer key on if needed.
  5. Choose A4 or US Letter.
  6. Generate and download the PDF.

Worked example

With family type Multiply/Divide and max 50, the generator might produce the family 6, 7, 42. The student writes 6 × 7 = 42, 7 × 6 = 42, 42 ÷ 6 = 7, and 42 ÷ 7 = 6. The answer key lists all four equations in the same cell order, so marking is a simple column scan.

Methodology

The fact-families engine picks two distinct small numbers as the “parts” and calculates the third number as the sum or product. The cell on the worksheet shows all three numbers; the student writes the four equations. The answer key re-derives all four equations from the three numbers. Every sheet is rendered through the shared branded PDF template.

Helpful preset ideas

  • Add/Subtract, max 20, 8 families — Year 2 introduction
  • Add/Subtract, max 100, 8 families — Year 3 consolidation
  • Multiply/Divide, max 144, 8 families — times-table reinforcement
  • Mixed, max 100, 10 families — end-of-topic revision

Best ways to practise fact families

  • Say the relationship out loud: “If 6 plus 4 is 10, then 10 minus 6 must be 4”.
  • Use fact families to introduce algebra-style missing-number thinking without the unknown symbol.
  • Tie multiplication and division fact families directly to your current times-table focus.
  • Practise reciting all four facts as a block rather than as four separate problems.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

The cell-based layout fits A4 and US Letter cleanly at 100% scale, with enough vertical room in each cell for four clear equations.

FAQs

Quick answers

What is a fact family?

A fact family is a group of related equations. For 4, 6 and 10: 4 + 6 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 − 4 = 6 and 10 − 6 = 4.

Can I mix addition and multiplication families?

Yes. Choose "Mixed" to randomly combine addition/subtraction families with multiplication/division families.

How large are the numbers?

You set a max number. For addition families the sum stays within that max; for multiplication families the product stays within it.

Does the answer key show all four facts?

Yes. The answer sheet lists the four related facts for every problem.
