Built for the fridge

A week-at-a-glance grid with one column per person, up to six of them, named in advance or left blank to write in. Underneath: a meals strip, a chores checklist, a column for important dates, a notes box.

Every section switches off. A household of two need not print a sheet built for six.

Why a column per person

Because the failures in a family week are collisions. A single shared column hides them.

Both parents working late on the same Thursday. Two children needing lifts to opposite ends of town at half past four, and a dentist appointment that lands square in the middle of the school run. In one column those read as a busy week. Side by side they are visibly impossible — and impossible is far easier to fix on a Sunday.

The meals strip is not a nice-to-have

It sits on the same sheet as the schedule for a reason. What is for dinner depends entirely on who is home, and when.

Plan meals against an empty calendar and you get a casserole on the night nobody is home before seven. Plan them underneath the week and you get something quick on the busy nights. It also removes the daily half-hour of deciding, which adds up to something real over a month.

The shopping list then follows from the strip rather than the other way round, which is incidentally how you stop buying the same bag of carrots on Tuesday and again on Friday because neither trip was written down anywhere.

Everyone writes on it

This decides whether it works.

A command centre maintained by one adult is a to-do list with extra columns, and it breeds exactly the resentment that any arrangement does where one person ends up holding all the information for everybody else. Put a pen on a string next to it. A teenager who writes their own football fixture in has agreed to it. The same fixture written in for them has not.

The important-dates column

For the things that are not this week but will ruin it if forgotten. A birthday. A deadline for a school trip payment, a car tax renewal, a friend's visit.

Move them into the grid when the week arrives. The column is a holding area. Its job is to stop a date living nowhere but in somebody's head.

Print it on a Sunday

Same time each week, filled in together, ten minutes. Print a fresh one rather than trying to keep a single sheet going: a week corrected and re-corrected in three colours of biro becomes unreadable, and an unreadable schedule is an ignored one.

FAQs

Quick answers

What is a family command center?

It's a single page that holds your household's whole week in one place: a schedule with a column for each family member, a meal plan, a chores checklist, important dates, and a notes box. You print it for the fridge or a wall frame so everyone can see what's happening at a glance.

How many family members can I add?

From one to six. The weekly schedule grid splits into that many columns. Type each person's name into the header, or leave it blank to get a write-in line you can change each week.

Can I hide the sections I don't need?

Yes. The meals strip, the to-do/chores list, the important-dates column, and the notes box all have toggles. Turn off the ones you don't use and the remaining sections expand to fill the page.

Is it free, and what paper sizes does it support?

It's completely free. Export a one-page PDF in A4 or US Letter and reprint it whenever you need a fresh week. Or laminate one copy and reuse it with a dry-erase marker.
