Quarter-inch (6.35 mm) packs twice the detail and is the standard US maths-book grid, while an eighth-inch is reserved for fine plotting. On the metric side, the closest neighbours are 1 cm (10 mm) and 5 mm. If a half inch feels too large for detailed plotting, step down to a finer grid; if you are teaching very young children or printing for readability, the half inch is exactly the right amount of space.

Worked example

Suppose a teacher is sketching a classroom floor plan and wants ½″ on paper to represent 1 foot of real space.
