Create Printable Sports Word Search Puzzles for PE and Sports Days

Quickly create free printable sports word search puzzles with a pre-loaded list of twelve familiar Olympic and everyday sports — soccer, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey, swimming, running, cycling, boxing, golf, basketball, and baseball.

Each sheet prints on A4 or US Letter as a branded PDF, with an optional colour-coded solution page. Keep the default list or edit it to match a Summer or Winter Olympics focus, a school sports day, or a specific club or team.

This sports word search generator is built for PE teachers, class teachers planning sports days, after-school club leaders, homeschool families with active learners, and fans who want a themed activity around a major tournament.

Why use a sports word search?

Sports vocabulary is familiar, motivating, and often overlooked in literacy lessons. A sports-themed word search is a brilliant way to sneak reading and spelling practice into a PE-flavoured activity, and it pairs well with a sports-day theme or a major tournament week. Use it for:

  • school sports day activity booklets
  • PE theory lessons and warm-ups
  • Summer Olympics and Paralympics tie-ins
  • World Cup, Six Nations, and major-tournament weeks
  • after-school sports club printables
  • reading intervention with high-motivation vocabulary
  • holiday-club and summer-camp activities
  • sports-themed birthday parties

Because the list is pre-loaded, you can have a themed sheet ready in under a minute.

What you can customise

The defaults are ready to print, but the tool gives you full control. You can choose:

  • Word list: Keep the twelve default sports or edit to your own
  • Grid size: From 10×10 up to 25×25 — useful when you keep BASKETBALL or SWIMMING in the list
  • Directions: Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and backwards — on or off
  • Case: Upper or lower case grid letters
  • Solution page: Toggle the colour-coded answer grid
  • Paper type: Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format
  • Worksheet title: Keep the default or add a team, school, or event name

A 15×15 grid works for the default list; 20×20 gives more room when the list includes longer sport names.

Worked example

Say you are putting together an activity booklet for school sports day. Keep the twelve default sports, choose a 20×20 grid, turn diagonals on, keep upper-case letters, and toggle on the solution page. Title the worksheet "Sports Day Word Search". The engine places SOCCER, TENNIS, CRICKET, RUGBY, HOCKEY, SWIMMING, RUNNING, CYCLING, BOXING, GOLF, BASKETBALL, and BASEBALL into the grid, fills the rest with random letters, and prints a word bank at the bottom.

The solution page highlights each sport in a different colour — handy for self-checking between races or for a quiet tent-side activity.

Methodology

The generator places each sport onto the grid in one of the directions you allow, retrying if a placement clashes with another word. Once every sport is placed, the remaining cells are filled with random letters from the chosen case. The solution page re-draws the grid with each sport highlighted. Longer sports such as BASKETBALL or SWIMMING occasionally need a larger grid, so the engine reports any unplaced words and suggests a bigger grid. Everything renders through the shared PrintablesWorld branded template.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Sports word search worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. A 20×20 grid fits comfortably on either paper size with space for a title and a word bank, even when the list includes BASKETBALL. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest letter grid.
