Create Printable Christmas Word Search Puzzles for the Festive Season

Quickly create free printable Christmas word search puzzles with a pre-loaded list of twelve festive words — Santa, elf, reindeer, snow, tree, gift, star, bell, candle, sleigh, carol, and holly.

Each sheet prints on A4 or US Letter as a branded PDF, with an optional colour-coded solution page for quick checking. Keep the default list or edit it to add class names, family traditions, or local festive favourites.

This Christmas word search generator is built for primary teachers planning end-of-term parties, Sunday school leaders, homeschool families running advent activities, and anyone who wants a calm, festive printable for the classroom or kitchen table.

Why use a Christmas word search?

The last week or two of the autumn term is a busy, wriggly time. A Christmas word search gives children a quiet, self-directed activity that still feels festive and celebratory. It lowers the energy in the room without switching off the learning. Use it for:

  • end-of-term classroom parties
  • advent calendar activity printables
  • Christingle and nativity rehearsal downtime
  • Christmas Fayre and winter fair activity tables
  • Sunday school and children's club handouts
  • long car journeys to visit family
  • Christmas Eve box fillers
  • holiday club sessions

Because the word list is pre-loaded, you can print a festive sheet in under a minute.

What you can customise

The defaults are ready to print, but every option is open to change. You can choose:

  • Word list: Keep the twelve festive words or edit to your own
  • Grid size: From 10×10 up to 25×25
  • Directions: Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and backwards — on or off
  • Case: Upper or lower case grid letters
  • Solution page: Toggle the colour-coded answer grid
  • Paper type: Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format
  • Worksheet title: Keep the default or add a class name

For ages 5+, a 15×15 grid with diagonals off keeps the puzzle friendly while still feeling like a proper word search.

Worked example

Say you are planning your Year 1 Christmas party. Keep the twelve default festive words, choose a 15×15 grid, turn diagonals off, keep upper-case letters, toggle on the solution page, and title the worksheet "Room 3 Christmas Party". The engine places SANTA, ELF, REINDEER, SNOW, TREE, GIFT, STAR, BELL, CANDLE, SLEIGH, CAROL, and HOLLY into the grid, fills the rest with random letters, and prints a word bank at the bottom.

The solution page shows the same grid with each word highlighted in a different colour — handy for a quick reveal at the end of party time.

Methodology

The generator places each word onto the grid in one of the directions you allow, retrying if a placement clashes with another word. Once every word is placed, the remaining cells are filled with random letters. The solution page re-draws the grid with each word highlighted. The puzzle is rendered through the shared PrintablesWorld branded template so fonts, margins, and headers match the rest of the site.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Christmas word search worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. A 15×15 grid fits comfortably on either paper size with space for a festive title and a word bank. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest letter grid.
