Create Printable Countries Word Search Puzzles for Geography Lessons

Quickly create free printable countries word search puzzles with a pre-loaded list of twelve well-known countries drawn from every inhabited continent — France, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Egypt, India, Mexico, Kenya, Germany, Australia, Argentina, and Vietnam.

Each sheet prints on A4 or US Letter as a branded PDF, with an optional colour-coded solution page. Keep the default list or edit it to focus on a single continent, a unit of study, or a specific region for a mapping activity.

This countries word search generator is built for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 geography teachers, humanities tutors, homeschool families running geography units, and anyone planning a topic week around world cultures.

Why use a countries word search?

Country names carry rich spelling patterns — silent letters, tricky vowel combinations, and unfamiliar consonant clusters — which makes them great material for older learners who are ready for a spelling stretch. Pair the puzzle with a world map and you have a two-part activity that mixes vocabulary and geography. Use it for:

  • geography topic launches and reviews
  • continents and oceans units
  • World Book Day country-themed activities
  • Olympic and World Cup topic work
  • global citizenship lessons
  • homeschool geography routines
  • quiz and club activities

Because each country is spelt correctly in the grid, solvers pick up spelling along with the geography.

What you can customise

The defaults are ready to print, but the tool gives you full control. You can choose:

  • Word list: Keep the twelve default countries or edit to your own
  • Grid size: From 10×10 up to 25×25 to fit longer names
  • Directions: Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and backwards — on or off
  • Case: Upper or lower case grid letters
  • Solution page: Toggle the colour-coded answer grid
  • Paper type: Download in A4 or US Letter PDF format
  • Worksheet title: Keep the default or focus on a continent

A 20×20 grid with diagonals on is a good starting point; longer country names such as ARGENTINA and AUSTRALIA need the extra room.

Continent-focused variants

European countries

Swap to France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, Austria for a European Union or Europe topic.

African countries

Use Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, Ethiopia, Senegal, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tunisia, Algeria for an Africa unit.

Asian countries

Try Japan, China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nepal, Mongolia, Cambodia, Philippines for an Asia topic.

Americas

Use Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Uruguay for a mixed North and South America list.

Worked example

Say you are running a Year 5 continents topic. Keep the default list of twelve countries, choose a 20×20 grid, turn diagonals and backwards on, keep upper-case letters, and toggle on the solution page. The engine places FRANCE, BRAZIL, JAPAN, CANADA, EGYPT, INDIA, MEXICO, KENYA, GERMANY, AUSTRALIA, ARGENTINA, and VIETNAM into the grid, fills the rest with random letters, and prints a word bank at the bottom.

Pair the printed puzzle with a blank world map and ask pupils to shade each found country as they solve — two learning outcomes in one activity.

Methodology

The generator places each country name onto the grid in one of the directions you allow, retrying if a placement clashes with another word. Once every country is placed, the remaining cells are filled with random letters from the chosen case. The solution page re-draws the grid with each country highlighted. Longer names occasionally cannot fit the smallest grid sizes, so the engine reports any unplaced words and suggests increasing the grid. The puzzle is rendered through the shared PrintablesWorld branded template.

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Countries word search worksheets print cleanly on A4 and US Letter. A 20×20 grid fits comfortably on either paper size with space for a title and a word bank. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest letter grid, especially when the list includes long country names.
