Printable College Ruled Lined Paper at 7.1 mm Spacing

College-ruled lined paper is the everyday notebook format most North American high school and university students grew up on: lines spaced at 9/32 of an inch, which works out to about 7.1 mm, with a red vertical margin guide roughly 32 mm from the left edge. This template produces a print-accurate version as a free PDF, so you can print exactly what you need at home or on a shared classroom printer in A4 or US Letter.

If you want tighter or wider spacing, check out Narrow Ruled Lined Paper at 6.35 mm or Wide Ruled Lined Paper at 8.7 mm, or open the fully customisable Lined Paper Generator.

Why college ruled?

College ruling is a goldilocks spacing. It is tight enough that a motivated note-taker can get plenty of content on a page, yet wide enough for legible cursive and room above the line for small corrections or interlinear notes. It is the default ruling for:

  • university lecture notes
  • high school and sixth-form revision
  • essay drafts, reports, and long-form writing
  • journaling and reflective writing
  • shorthand and meeting notes
  • tutoring sessions and study groups
  • bullet journal indexes and monthly logs

If your handwriting size is around 3 mm x-height, college ruling leaves a comfortable gap above the next line, which makes the page look calmer and easier to scan than tightly packed narrow rule.

What is on the page

The template draws horizontal lines at 7.1 mm spacing across the full printable width of the sheet, and a single vertical red margin guide 32 mm in from the left edge. Above the top rule sits a small header region you can use for a name, date, or subject. Line weight is tuned to sit behind your writing without fading on the page.

  • 7.1 mm line spacing — the standard US college rule.
  • 32 mm margin guide — a vertical red line on the left.
  • Header strip at the top for Name / Date / Class.
  • Line colour options — blue, grey, or green.

Who this paper is for

Students

The default student ruling for essays, notes, and problem sets. Keep a stack in your bag for any class that does not provide handouts.

Designers & makers

Useful as a reliable journaling surface when you are thinking in words rather than sketches — meeting notes, design-rationale drafts, writing-out-loud sessions.

Teachers

Print classroom sets for extended writing tasks, test papers, and in-class essays. Use the Name/Date/Class header for quick sorting.

Hobbyists

Writers, journalers, and language-learners who want a specific, consistent ruling without stockpiling branded notebooks.

College ruled versus the alternatives

Versus wide ruled (8.7 mm)

Wide ruled suits early writers whose letters are still tall and loopy. College ruled fits smaller, neater handwriting and packs around 20% more writing onto each page.

Versus narrow ruled (6.35 mm)

Narrow ruled squeezes even more onto the page but can feel cramped. College ruled is the middle ground favoured by most adult note-takers.

Versus dotted or grid paper

Lined paper is kinder on prose; grid and dot paper win when you need to mix sketches or tables with writing.

How to use the tool

  1. Leave spacing at 7.1 mm, or adjust in the generator for a custom value.
  2. Keep the margin guide on, or turn it off if you prefer a clean left edge.
  3. Choose A4 or US Letter.
  4. Click Generate.
  5. Preview and download the PDF.

Print at 100% scale. If your printer has a "borderless" or "fit to page" option, switch it off so the 7.1 mm spacing stays accurate.

Worked example

You want an A4 sheet ready for a 45-minute handwritten essay. At 7.1 mm spacing, A4 (297 mm tall, with about 20 mm top/bottom margins) fits around 36 lines per page. A typical handwritten rate of 20 to 30 words per line gives you room for about 900 words per sheet — enough for a planned paragraph per side at a sensible pace.

Methodology

The template draws horizontal rules at exact 7.1 mm intervals in vector PDF. The margin guide is a single vertical line drawn in red at 32 mm from the printable-area left edge — matching the Western notebook convention. Top and bottom margins are balanced so the pattern of lines sits centred on the page with a small header band. Output passes through the shared printable-paper template so branding and QR placement are consistent across all paper templates on the site.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

The line spacing stays at 7.1 mm regardless of paper size; only the number of lines per page changes. A4 fits a few more lines than US Letter because it is slightly taller. Print at 100% scale for correct spacing.
